Highlights

Be in awe of the incredible history, spiritual side and culture of Japan on a 9 day Japan Panorama tour.

Land in Osaka and begin your time in Japan by ticking off one of the country’s most recognisable landmarks at Osaka Castle. Take a moment to appreciate the striking design and learn about the role the castle played in the unification of Japan during the 16th century. Then gain insight into another of Japan’s icons – this time of the beer variety – with a visit to the Asahi Breweries in Suita. Brush up on your know-how of the production process and sample a brew in the tasting room. Osaka is also your base for an outing to Nara, to see Todaiji Temple and its bronze Buddha statue, and to take a stroll through Nara Park and its resident herd of free-roaming deer.

Travel out to the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha and see its torii gate, and try to resist picking up Kyoto souvenirs and Japanese mochi on the walk enroute to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Head out to Hakone to take in a landscape of hot springs and active sulphur around the Owakudani volcano – and keep your fingers crossed the clear conditions allow for a view of Mt Fuji while here! Sip traditional Japanese green tea at a local tea factory and then drive to Tokyo, the ever-energetic capital city. There is so much to see and do in Tokyo and a guided city tour is the perfect introduction to this metropolis. Among the landmarks you’ll be taken to are the soaring Tokyo Tower, Edo Castle and the oldest temple in Japan at Asakusa Kannon Temple. Browse for trinkets and keepsakes along Nakamise shopping street and Ameyoko Market, and also make the most of an entire day of free time to keep exploring the bounty of experiences and sights Tokyo offers its visitors.

Travellers can opt to extend their tour of Japan to a 13 day itinerary that includes time in Hiroshima and Okayama.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff  Osaka

Make your way to the airport and board a flight that takes you to Osaka in Japan! You will be met by your tour guide upon arrival and transferred to the hotel for check in via shuttle bus. Use the rest of the day to relax in the hotel and to get ready for your first full day of touring tomorrow.

Day 2: Osaka – Nara – Osaka (B)

Have breakfast at the hotel and then travel with the group to see the exterior of Osaka Castle. This is one of Japan’s most internationally recognised landmarks and dates back to the 16th century. The group then moves on to Asahi Breweries in Suita to learn about the production process of one of Japan’s flagship brews, and there is also an opportunity for samples in the tasting room. Explore the Shinsaibashi shopping district before stopping in Nara, the first capital city of Japan. Marvel at the bronzed Buddha statue at Todaiji Temple and say hello to the free-roaming deer that call Nara Park home. Return to Osaka in the evening.

Day 3: Osaka (B)

You have today as free time to explore Osaka however you like. Make a beeline for Dotonbori to uncover the famed shop displays and entertainment offerings, pay a visit to one of the biggest aquariums in the world at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, soak up the bygone-era atmosphere with a stroll through Shinsekai, or tuck into plates of Osaka street food such as kushikatsu (grilled meat skewers), okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes), takoyaki (octopus-filled balls), and kitsune udon (noodles in seafood broth topped with fried tofu).

Optional: Kyoto City Tour
Join this excursion to nearby Kyoto to take in Nijo Castle and the Golden Pavilion, and to attend a traditional kimono performance at the Nishijin Textile Gallery. This outing concludes with a visit to Nishiki Market, one of the best places in the city to try delicious Kyoto street food and specialities. Additional cost applies.

Day 4: Osaka – Kyoto – Toyohashi (B, L)

Head out to Fushimi Inari Taisha this morning. This is the head shrine of the kami Inari in Kyoto and is recognisable thanks to its popular torii path. It was established in 711 AD and was used by locals praying for successful harvests, business successes and health of family. From the shrine, the group moves to Kiyomizu-dera temple. This temple was originally built in the 7th century and was later rebuilt in the 17th century. Enroute to the temple the group walks past a shopping district where you will have opportunity to pick up souvenirs, Kyoto ceramics, Japanese mochi and snacks. You are then transferred to Toyohashi via bus.

Day 5: Toyohashi – Tokyo (B, L)

This morning’s first excursion takes you out to Hakone to see the Owakudani volcano. The volcano was created 3000 years ago, and this volcanic valley is now dotted with active sulphur vents and hot springs. If conditions are clear, you may also be treated to an excellent view of Mt. Fuji! There is also a ride on the Hakone Ropeway and a visit to Grinpia Makinohara tea factory for a tasting while in the area. Afterwards, the group drives to Tokyo. You have the evening as free time once in the Japanese capital city.

Please note that the visit to Owakudani is weather dependent, and alternative arrangements will be made if conditions are unsuitable.

Day 6: Tokyo (B)

Explore the wonders of Tokyo on a guided city tour this morning. See the Tokyo Tower, one of the skyline’s most striking buildings, and also stop at the Imperial Palace (or Edo Castle) and learn about its role in Japanese culture. Other sights on this outing include Asakusa Kannon Temple, the oldest temple in Japan. Pick up souvenirs and street food fare with a stroll on Nakamise shopping street, and be caught up in the hustle and bustle of vendor stalls and busy restaurants at Ameyoko Market. The last stop on the tour in the shopping district of Ginza. You are then free to have the rest of the day as independent exploration.

Day 7: Tokyo (B)

The entire day is yours to see and explore Tokyo however you wish. Tick off some of Tokyo’s more quirky experiences by seeking out robot restaurants and cat cafes, or try your hand at navigating the frenzy at Shibuya Scramble Crossing. Set an early alarm to watch a sumo morning practice session at one of the stables (training rooms) around Tokyo, or head to Harajuku to check out the eccentric fashions and styles of Kawaii culture. Tonight is your final evening in Japan.

Day 2: Osaka – Kobe – Himeji – Okayama (B)

Head to Kiku-Masamune Sake Brewery Museum after breakfast at the hotel and learn about this authentic variety of Japanese sake. This afternoon sees you visit Himeji. This town in the Kansai region is known for its incredibly well-preserved castle – one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Japan. Admire the tiered white façade of the castle, and then continue to Okayama.

It is also one of only a few Daimyo gardens in the region where historical change is evident. Next, the group moves to Hiroshima Peace Memorial (also known as Atomic Bomb Dome). This monument commemorates the victims of the first nuclear bomb drop during World War II, and also serves as a place of prayer for those wishing for world peace and an end to nuclear weapons.
