Uncover the bounty of treasures and natural wonders on a 7 day Japan Golden Route tour, beginning in Osaka and finishing in Tokyo.
Osaka is the powerhouse epicentre of the Kansai region and is home to myriad shrines, historic sites and cherry blossoms. It is also your first touchpoint with this insightful tour. From Osaka the group branches out to Nara, the location of Todaiji Temple. This temple is recognisable for housing one of the largest bronze Buddha statues in Japan (it stands at an impressive 15 metres tall!) and the Nio Guardian King figures that watch over the Nandaimon Gate. Have an up-close encounter with some of Nara’s famous four-legged residents while here; the free-roaming deer that delight visitors to Nara Park. Continue to Kyoto to take in some of this city’s most notable landmarks: Nijo Castle, Togetsukyo Bridge, Kinkaku-ji, and the dreamlike Bamboo Grove in the Arashiyama District.
Step aboard a Shinkansen bullet train for the journey to Shizuoka, the prefecture where travellers will find Japan’s most famous peak: Mt Fuji. Ascend to Mt Fuji Fifth Station for a panoramic outlook across the Fuji Five Lakes area, and then travel back down to ground level to Oishi Park. A spot by Lake Kawaguchi offers another perspective of the still-striking mountain. The final destination of the tour is the ever-magnetic Tokyo, arguably one of the world’s most energetic, vibrant and diverse capital cities. Wander through the impeccably manicured Hamarikyu Gardens and learn about how the levels of its seawater ponds change with the tide. You also have the opportunity to browse for souvenirs along Nakamise Shopping Street, stroll through Asakusa Kannon Temple, take a cruise on the Sumida River, and look out over the city skyline from Shinjuku Municipal Observation Building.
This itinerary can be extended to a 9 day package to include time in Hiroshima.
Day 1: Australia –
– Osaka, Japan
Depart on your Qantas flight and travel to Osaka in Japan. Upon your arrival at Kansai Airport (KIX) you will be met and transferred to your accommodation.
Day 2: Osaka – Nara – Kyoto (B)
The group makes the drive from Osaka to Nara this morning, and visits Todaiji Temple, one of Japan’s most celebrated sites. The temple is home to a mammoth bronze Buddha statue, the largest of its kind in Japan. Pass by the Nandaimon Gate on the walk to the temple and take note of the two fierce-looking statues that stand guard at the gate. These figures represent the Nio Guardian Kings.
Walk through Nara Park on the way back from the temple. It is here where you’ll meet some of the park’s furriest residents: members of a free-roaming herd of deer. The Shinto believed the deer to be messengers of the gods and today, the park is home to almost 1200 of these four-legged creatures who have been known to eagerly approach visitors in search of deer biscuits and other edible treats. The group then moves to Kyoto to see Kinkaku-ji. This UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed beauty is a symbol of the city and is also known as the Golden Pavilion. Be on the lookout for the pavilion’s gold-covered floors.
Day 3: Kyoto –
– Shizuoka (B)
Visit Nijo Castle this morning. The castle was the former residence of the Tokugawa Shogunate and is now just one of the city’s many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Afterwards, the group moves to the Arashiyama District and then to Togetsukyo Bridge. Experience the serenity of the Bamboo Grove and later board the Shinkansen bullet train for the journey to Shizuoka. The train travels at speeds of up to 280 km/h and is a thrilling experience. A hotel transfer waits upon arrival in Hamamatsu.
Day 4: Shizuoka – Mt Fuji – Tokyo (B)
Make for the Mt Fuji area today. The first stop is Mt Fuji Fifth Station, which sits 2300 metres above sea level and provides an excellent vantage point for gazing across the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes landscape. Continue to Oishi Park and Lake Kawaguchi to take in a different perspective of Japan’s most famous peak. Depart for Tokyo in the afternoon.
Day 5: Tokyo (B)
The group seeks out the Hamarikyu Gardens in central Tokyo to see the seawater ponds. The levels of these pools change with the tides and are one of the Gardens’ biggest drawcards. Other notable features here are the teahouse, where visitors can take respite and enjoy the pretty scenery. There is more time to relax aboard a Sumida River cruise. Visit Asakusa Kannon Temple and browse for souvenirs along Nakamise Shopping Street. The final stop on today’s itinerary is Shinjuku Municipal Observation Building for one last panorama over the city’s skyline.
Day 6: Tokyo –
– Australia (B)
You will be transferred to the airport for your return flight to Australia.
Day 7: Australia

Day 2: Osaka – Himeji – Hiroshima (B)
Hit the road for the journey to Hiroshima. There is a stop at Himeji Castle along the way. The castle is one of the best surviving examples of quintessential Japanese feudal architecture. Arrive in Hiroshima in the afternoon. The city has the unenviable distinction as being the location of the first atomic bomb drop during World War II and is a sombre destination to pay respects.
Day 3: Hiroshima – Osaka (B)
Your time in Hiroshima begins at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum. You will then visit Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima to see the torii gate at high tide. Set out for Osaka in the afternoon.
