Highlights

Uncover the unique heritage, culture and sights of the Land of the Rising Sun with this 12 day Japan Golden Route tour with Hiroshima and a 5-star free Singapore stopover.

Begin your journey through Japan with taking a step back in a sombre chapter of its recent history. Land in Osaka and immediately set out for Hiroshima. Before reaching this infamous city however, there is a stop in Himeji to see its eponymous castle and take in its well-preserved structure – widely considered one of the best examples of archetypal Japanese architecture. The next day sees you make the sombre visit to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park where you may pay your respects to those killed in the dropping of the atomic bomb during World War II. You will also learn more about the impact this history-changing event had on the city and its people.

Return to Osaka for an overnight stay ahead of travelling to Nara to visit Todaiji Temple and see the mammoth bronze statue of Buddha the resides inside – the largest of its kind at more than 14 metres tall! Expect an encounter with some furry Nara locals too; the free-roaming deer that call Nara Park home. You might even be tempted into buying some of the special deer biscuits (available from vendors throughout the park) to feed to these inquisitive creatures. Continue to Kyoto and be dazzled by the glittering gold floors of Kinkaku-ji, and then the striking Nijo Castle. Your time in Kyoto also has you explore the Arashiyama District, home to numerous temples, shrines and the ever-photogenic Bamboo Grove. Board a bullet train for the fast-paced journey from Kyoto to Shizuoka, and use the latter city as your springboard for seeking out the most famous peak in Japan: Mt. Fuji. Make the trip up to Mt Fuji Fifth Station and have your breath taken away by the view of the surrounding area. The outrageous panoramas don’t end there though, as you are next off to Oishi Park and Lake Kawaguchi to see this iconic summit from a multitude of other angles.

Delight in a whole day devoted to exploring some of the best things to do in Tokyo. Wander the grounds of Hamarikyu Gardens, hop aboard a scenic cruise of the Sumida River, learn about cultural importance of Asakusa Kannon Temple, find the perfect souvenir along Nakamise Shopping Street, and commit the view afforded from Shinjuku Municipal Observation Building to memory. There are still a few days before you head home however, and you get to spend it staying in a 5-star hotel in Singapore. Check into the award-winning Mandarin Orchard Singapore, and choose to explore this buzzing metropolis however you like – be it wandering the beaches of Sentosa Island, gazing up at the flora of Gardens by the Bay, shopping up a storm along Orchard Road, or feasting on authentic local cuisine at the hawker centres.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff – Osaka

Head to the airport and board an international flight that takes you to Osaka. You touch down at Kansai Airport and are met by an arrival transfer to be taken to your hotel for check in. Use the rest of the day is freshen up and relax after your flight, or waste no time exploring the area around your accommodation.

Please note that some flights may depart one day earlier.

Day 2: Osaka – Himeji – Hiroshima (B)

Meet up with your group this morning and, after breakfast, set out on the journey to Hiroshima. A stop is made enroute in Himeji to see its eponymous castle. This magnificent structure is considered to be one of the best-preserved examples of classic Japanese classic architecture. Inside the hilltop Himeji Castle, which also goes by the name ‘White Heron Castle’, visitors can see various historic sites, defensive systems and some 83 rooms. It was also one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Japan.

Following your visit, the group continues to Hiroshima and arrives later in the afternoon.

Day 3: Hiroshima – Osaka (B)

Head out into the city to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. This is your first visit of the day and is a poignant reminder of the city’s tragic history, and the devastation it experienced with the drop of the atomic bomb during World War II. The next site visited is Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima. Famous for its floating torii gate, this Shinto shrine is sure to be one of the most photographed landmarks in Japan.

Return to Osaka in the afternoon.

Day 4: Osaka – Nara – Kyoto (B)

Bid goodbye to Osaka as you leave this morning for Nara. You are in the city to see its famed Todaiji Temple. This Buddhist temple dates back to 728 AD and is home to the world’s largest bronze statue of Buddha Vairocana (known as Daibutsu in Japanese). While at the temple you will also see the Nandaimon Gate, which is particularly notable for the pair of intimidating-looking figurines perched atop. These statues represent the Nio Guardian Kings. The group walks through Nara Park on the return to the coach. This is your opportunity for an up-close encounters with the cute, furry and four-legged residents of the park: the free-roaming deer believed by Shinto to be the messengers of the Gods. These inquisitive critters frequently interact with visitors – although this is mainly in the hopes of being fed some of the special deer biscuits available for purchase from vendors around the park. Hop back aboard your coach and make the drive in Kyoto. See Kinkaku-ji, known as the Golden Pavilion, upon your arrival and admire its gold-covered floors and its striking design.

Please note that your main luggage will be taken straight to Tokyo, so you will need to pack and bring a separate overnight bag for the next two nights.

This sightseeing district is dotted with important temples and shrines, and is also the location of the supremely photogenic Bamboo Grove – which you get to see while in the area. Another stop of the day is Togetsukyo Bridge. The group then moves to the railway station to board the Shinkansen bullet train, arguably one of Japan’s most acclaimed transportation innovations, for the high-speed journey through the countryside and to Shizuoka. A walking transfer assists you with locating the hotel for check in.

Return to Earth and seek out Oishi Park and Lake Kawaguchi to admire Mt Fuji from another, yet equally photogenic, angle. You then hit the road for the journey to Tokyo, arriving in the Japanese capital city in the afternoon.

Tokyo is a dazzling place. It is a city thoroughly entrenched in the contemporary, yet that also clings to its heritage and legacy.
