Highlights

There has never been a more tempting time to explore the wonders of the Land of the Rising Sun with this 10 day Japan Golden Route tour with free 5-star Singapore stopover.

Arrive in Osaka and have some whirlwind free time in this vibrant destination ahead of travelling to Nara to see the Todaiji Temple. This is one of Japan’s most visited cultural sights and one glimpse of the giant bronze statue of Buddha will give clarity as to why. Also be sure to look up at the pair of fierce-looking figures perched on the Nandaimon Gate while you’re here. Make friends with the four-legged residents of Nara Park. The herd of free-roaming deer that live within the park are believed by the Shinto to be messengers from the gods, and are inquisitive enough to come right up to visitors – in the hopes of being fed special deer biscuits! Travel to Kyoto to take in the magnificent gold-covered floors of Kinkaku-ji, the incredible history of Nijo Castle, the temples and shrines of Arashiyama, and the soaring shoots of the Bamboo Grove.

Hop aboard one of Japan’s most lauded engineering innovations – the Shinkansen train – and travel at breakneck speeds through the countryside to Shizuoka. Use this destination as your springboard for travelling to the most famous peak in Japan: Mt Fuji. Make the ascent up this legendary slope to Mt Fuji Fifth Station and prepare to be totally captivated by the sweeping views afforded of the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes area. Take all the photos you have time for – although no image can do this view justice! You head back down to ground level and towards Oishi Park and Lake Kawaguchi to see the mountain from a different perspective (and to take even more photos!). Your final destination in Japan is Tokyo, the capital city that promises a veritable melting pot of heritage landmarks, striking architecture, contemporary skyscrapers and unique subcultures. A full day in Tokyo has you moving between the seawater pools and teahouse of Hamarikyu Gardens, a cruise along the Sumida River, the Asakusa Kannon Temple, and the boutiques of Nakamise Shopping Street. Cap off your time in Tokyo by headed up to the viewing deck at Shinjuku Municipal Observation Building.

It is time to go home just yet however, and you board a flight from Tokyo to Singapore. Check into the 5-star Mandarin Orchard Singapore, an award-winning hotel located along famous Orchard Road, and revel in having three nights in this vibrant city to do, see, explore and experience whatever you like. Dedicate your time to seeing the big-ticket attractions, such as Gardens by the Bay, Fort Canning Park or Sentosa Island, or hone in on the hawker centres and sampling as many dishes of chilli crab, char kway teow, Hokkien mee and Hainanese chicken rice as you can muster.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff – Osaka

Pack your bags, double check you have your passport, and make your way to the airport to catch your flight to Osaka in Japan! This vibrant city is your departure point for your tour of Japan’s Golden Route. You will be met by a transfer upon your arrival in Osaka and then taken to the hotel for check in. The remainder of the day is yours at leisure, and you can choose to either relax at the accommodation or get out into the city to start your explorations.

Please note that some flights may depart one day earlier.

Day 2: Osaka – Nara – Kyoto (B)

Meet with your fellow travelling companions this morning, and set out on the drive from Osaka to Nara. You are here to visit Todaiji Temple, one of the most popular tourist landmarks in Japan. The temple is renowned for the giant bronze statue of Buddha, and also for its Nandaimon Gate – found on the entryway into the temple and guarded by a pair fierce-looking figures designed to represent the Nio Guardian Kings. Your next stop is Nara Park. Walk through the park after your temple visit, and get up close with some of the park’s most inquisitive residents: the herd of free-roaming deer believed by the Shinto to be messengers of the gods. Be careful of your pockets as these furry creatures search for any of the special deer biscuits (available for purchase from vendors throughout the park). The final stop of the day is Kyoto where the group takes in the grandeur of Kinkaku-ji. This UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed landmark is also known as the Golden Pavilion, thanks to its gold-covered floors.

Please note that your baggage will be taken directly to Tokyo. You will need to arrange an overnight bag to take with you for Kyoto and Shizuoka.

Day 3: Kyoto – train-icon – Shizuoka (B)

Set your sights on a visit to Nijo Castle this morning. The castle was built in 1603 and served as the official Kyoto resident of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Within its grounds are various fortifications, the ruins of Honmaru Palace, and lovely gardens. Nijo Castle is just one of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites to be found and admired in Kyoto. Move into the city’s Arashiyama District, view Togetsukyo Bridge, and be in awe of the other-worldly serenity of the Bamboo Grove. It then comes time for you to experience one of Japan’s most thrilling technologies: the Shinkansen bullet train, on the journey to Shizuoka. This train hurtles through the countryside at speeds of up to 280 km/h! Arrive in Hamamatsu and make the walk to your hotel to check in.

Day 4: Shizuoka – Mt Fuji – Tokyo (B)

The group travels towards the famed peak of Mt Fuji today. Make a stop at Mt Fuji Fifth Station to take in the sweeping views afforded of the Fuji Five Lakes landscape. This photo opportunity is one you’ll want to make sure you capture from every angle! Head back down to ground level to continue to Oishi Park and Lake Kawaguchi to admire a different perspective of Japan’s most famous summit. Afterwards, the group departs for Tokyo and arrives later in the afternoon.

Day 5: Tokyo (B)

You have an entire day to uncover the thrills, sights and sounds of the Japanese capital city. Tokyo is a melting pot of juxtapositions – and this is what makes it one of the most exciting destinations in Asia. Head to Hamarikyu Gardens in central Tokyo, and learn about the seawater ponds with levels that change with the tides. The gardens are also home to a teahouse. Move from the Gardens to your scenic cruise along the Sumida River, and then see Asakusa Kannon Temple. Hunt down the perfect souvenir along Nakamise Shopping Street, and make the final scheduled stop of your tour itinerary by heading up to the loftily perched viewing deck at Shinjuku Municipal Observation Building. This is your final evening in Japan.

Day 6: Tokyo – airplane-takeoff – Australia (B)

A transfer picks you up from the hotel at the necessary time and takes you to the airport with plenty of time to spare, so you can catch your return flight to Australia.

Day 7: Australia

A transfer picks you up from the hotel at the necessary time and takes you to the airport with plenty of time to spare, so you can catch your flight to Singapore – ready to unwind with a 3 night end-of-trip stopover! Touch down at Singapore Changi Airport and make your way to the Mandarin Orchard Singapore, a 5-star hotel that is your base for your stopover. Check into your room of this award-winning hotel and then beginning planning how you might like to spend the next few days in Singapore. There is no set itinerary you need to follow, so what you see, do, experience and uncover is entirely up to you.

A great place to start discovering Singapore – especially if it’s your first time in this buzzing city – is to explore the neighbourhood around the hotel. An Orchard Road address means the hotel is within a hop, skip and jump of a line-up of designer shops, high-end boutiques and swanky department stores – heaven for those wanting to indulge in retail therapy. The lush lawns and grounds of Fort Canning Park are a 20-minute walk away, and there are two MRT stations within close proximity of the hotel to help you travel to other parts of the city.

Day 7: Singapore (B)

Not sure where to start exploring Singapore? It’s hard to go past the big-name attractions – Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, Sentosa Island – but there are also great museums and galleries to visit if you are keen to learn more about the arts and culture of Singapore. Seek out the maze of narrow streets in Chinatown and wander past souvenir stands, antique shops, quirky boutiques and cool wine bars. Pop into the tailors or jewellery stores of Little India. Tiong Bahru is one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods and is where you can admire heritage architecture or stop at Tiong Bahru Market. Eager to sample the street fare that Singapore has become so famous for? Make note of the top food courts and brush up on your hawker centre etiquette before setting out for the likes of Maxwell Food Centre, Chinatown Complex Food Centre, Old Airport Road Food Centre and Tiong Bahru Food Centre. If in doubt of what stalls to visit and what to order, simply ask a local for their recommendation!

Day 8: Singapore (B)

This is your final day in Singapore. Make plans to see more of the city’s sights, indulge in more plates from hawker centres, browse for keepsakes in local markets, or take advantage of the hotel facilities – swimming pool, tennis court and a bar.

Day 9: Singapore – airplane-takeoff – Australia (B)

Have breakfast at the hotel and then make your way back to Singapore Changi Airport to catch your flight to Australia.

Arrive back in Australia today.
