Highlights

Begin your discovery of south-eastern Europe, taking in medieval monasteries, charming villages and dynamic cities, on a 17 day Spectacular Balkans small group tour.

Get your first introduction to this region’s medieval history with visits to a pair of Serbia’s most culturally important monasteries at Manasija and Ravanica, and follow this up with extra insight into the area’s ancient past by stopping at the archaeological sites at Mediana (Serbia) and Stobi (Macedonia). Have some time to take in the pretty streetscape of Ohrid and the views of the city’s namesake lake, and make another border crossing to travel to Tirana in Albania. Admire the Albanian capital’s most striking landmarks – Skanderbeg Square, Et’Hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower – on a guided trip, and then delve into the country’s Communist legacy by learning about the concrete bunkers around the city of Durres.

Move into Montenegro and cruise along its spectacular coastline with stops in Budva and Kotor. Journey to the highest point in the Balkans at Durmitor Mountain and capture the beauty of this landscape, with its graceful peaks, glittering lakes and verdant meadows. Seek out Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina and wander around its famous old town market at Bascarsija – a great place to sample Serbian coffee and pick up some souvenirs of your tour. Stroll past the well-preserved wooden structures inside the open-air museum at Sirogojno to gain a glimpse into traditional life, and return to Belgrade to tick off some of the Serbian capital’s most important things to see, such as Kalemegdan Fortress, St. Sava and the vibrant Skadarlija vintage street.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff – Belgrade

Make your way to the airport and board a flight to take you to the capital of Serbia, Belgrade.

Day 2: Belgrade (D)

You arrive in Belgrade! You will be welcomed at the airport and transferred to the hotel for check in. The remainder of the day is free time, whether you choose to remain at the hotel to relax after the flight, or if you hit the pavements of the city to begin exploring.

For those purchasing the Tour Only option, your tour starts today. Please make your own way to the hotel.

Day 3: Belgrade – Nis (B, L, D)

Breakfast is served at the hotel and the group then sets out for its first full day of sightseeing! You travel towards the south of Serbia and make the first stop at the monasteries of Manasija and Ravanica. The former is a Serbian Orthodox monastery that was established by Stefan Lazarevic, a prince and despot from the 15th century. It is one of the most culturally important monasteries in the country. Likewise, Ravanica Monastery is an invaluable site of medieval Serbian culture. Have lunch at a local restaurant and continue on the road to Nis. This is the third largest city in Serbia and one of the oldest settlements in Europe. Overnight here.

Day 4: Nis – Skopje (B, L, D)

Seek out the sights of Skopje on a scenic excursion this morning, and pay a visit to nearby Mediana. This archaeological site sprawls across 40 hectares and is the location where many Roman artefacts – including the remains of an ancient villa – have been unearthed. Next it is onto Chegar Hill and then back to Nis for lunch at a local restaurant. The group says goodbye to Nis in the afternoon and travels to Skopje in Macedonia for this evening’s overnight stay.

Day 5: Skopje – Stobi – Ohrid (B, L, D)

The first visit of the day is to the Stobi ruins, located near Gradsko. Stobi was an ancient city that became capital of a Roman province after it was conquered. Given its position of the confluence of the Crna and Vardar Rivers, Stobi was an important stronghold for both trade and warfare. Learn about its history and the excavation process here. Enroute to Ohrid there is a lunch stop in Prilep.

Day 6: Ohrid – Tirana (B, L, D)

Spend this morning sightseeing around Ohrid and admire this resort city’s pretty old town and cluster of medieval churches, houses and old world monuments. Ohrid and its namesake lake are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city’s most famous landmark is Samuilova Fortress, which sits atop a hill and commands extraordinary views of the landscape below. Lunch is served at a local restaurant and the group then commences the journey to Tirana, the capital of Albania, for an overnight stay.

Day 7: Tirana – Durres (B, L, D)

Discover Tirana this morning on a guided city tour. You’ll take in some of the best sights from around Albania’s largest city, including Skanderbeg Square and Statue, Et’Hem Bey Mosque and the Clock Tower. As you wander between monuments, you’ll also be able to experience local Albanian culture. Move to Durres, one of Albania’s oldest settlements, after lunch and explore landmarks attesting to the city’s Communist legacy such as concrete bunkers.

Day 8: Durres – Shkoder – Budva (B, L, D)

Journey to Shkoder this morning. Perched on the shore of Lake Skadar in northwest Albania, this historic town has an interesting Roman heritage and played an important role in the Albanian liberation movement. The group sets its sights on Montenegro in the afternoon, making the drive towards Budva after lunch at a local eatery.

Day 9: Budva – Kotor – Budva (B, L, D)

Take a day trip from Budva to Kotor. This small town is a popular tourist destination and is an old Mediterranean port boasting impressive city walls and plenty of Venetian-influenced architecture. Take in the views across the water and catch a glimpse of the Our Lady of the Rocks, a church located on a tiny manmade island in the middle of the bay. Return to Budva in the afternoon.

Day 10: Budva – Zabljak (B, L, D)

On the itinerary today is the journey to Zabljak. This city has the highest altitude location of any city in the Balkans, sitting at 1456 metres above sea level. You’ll get the chance to see Durmitor National Park, too.

Day 11: Zabljak – Sarajevo (B, L, D)

Spend more time admiring the abundant natural beauty of Durmitor Mountain. Expect to discover more than 18 glacial lakes and numerous limestone peaks. Take particular note of Black Lake, the park’s largest and deepest body of water. Arrive in Sarajevo in the afternoon.

Day 12: Sarajevo – Zlatibor (B, L, D)

Stroll around Sarajevo this morning. The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, though small, is brimming with historical sites and fascinating things to see. This guided tour will take you past Bascarsija, the old town market where you will have opportunity to sample fresh local coffee or pick up unique souvenirs. Enjoy a lunch of traditional cuisine before a transfer to Zlatibor.

Day 13: Zlatibor – Mokra Gora – Sirogojno – Kraljevo (B, L, D)

Travel to Mokra Gora this morning, a destination known for the heritage Sargan Eight Railway. Visit the ethno village at Sirogojno after lunch. This open-air museum allows travellers to walk past authentic architecture and structures from the 19th century. Time here is a great way to understand what life in the area was once like and some of the buildings you’ll see are a bakery, a dairy and an inn. Overnight in Kraljevo.

Day 14: Kraljevo – Belgrade (B, L, D)

See the Studenica Monastery today. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was established by Stevan Nemanja in the 12th century and is considered one of the most important religious sites in Serbia. A second local monastery, Zica Monastery, is on the agenda for after lunch. It was commissioned by the first king of Serbia, Stefan the First-Crowned, and is recognised not only for its incredible history but also for its eye-catching red-orange exterior. Later, the group heads to Belgrade to spend the night.

Day 15: Belgrade (B, L, D)

The Serbian capital of Belgrade is a lively metropolis that sits at the meeting point of the Danube and Sava rivers. Throughout history Belgrade has been occupied by the Romans, Slavs, Ottomans and many other empires. Be introduced to its heritage and culture on a sightseeing tour that moves past landmarks including Kalemegdan, Knez Mihailova Street, St. Sava Temple, and through the Skadarlija Bohemian Quarter. Tap into local atmosphere with lunch at a nearby restaurant, and then make an excursion to Kovacica. This small village is best known for its naïve art and cluster of galleries showing off works belong to this artistry school. Tonight’s dinner is at a restaurant along Skadarlija, a beautiful vintage street in Belgrade. This is your final evening of the tour.

Day 16: Belgrade – airplane-takeoff Australia (B)

Have breakfast at the hotel and then take the transfer to Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) to begin your return journey to Australia.

For those purchasing the Tour Only option, at the appropriate time please make your own way from the hotel to your next travel arrangements.

Day 17: Australia

Arrive back in Australia today.
