Highlights

Uncover the cultural, historical and architectural wonders of a trio of European countries on a 14 day Best of Austria and Hungary with Czech Republic tour.

Your European holiday, however, begins in Munich, the largest city of Germany’s Bavaria region, and you have some time to explore this history-rich metropolis once your flights from Australia land. See what you can of Munich until you board a train for the journey to Prague. Nicknamed the ‘City of a Hundred Spires’, the capital city of the Czech Republic is as beautiful as it is vibrant and popular. There is a guided walking tour, led by a local expert, upon arrival as a way of insightful introduction into Prague’s history, top sights and most recognisable landmarks. Learn about the centuries-old legacy of Prague’s Jewish Quarter, peer into the window displays of the shops in the Old Town, and begin planning what sights you might like to see – Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, Astronomical Clock – in the two days of free time that follow. From Prague you travel to one of the Czech Republic’s most photogenic towns: Cesky Krumlov in Bohemia. This town has UNESCO World Heritage Site status and boasts well-preserved medieval houses, cobblestone streets and the second-largest castle in the Czech Republic (the moat is even home to real-life bears – a tradition that dates back hundreds of years!).

Travel to the ever-elegant city of Vienna next. The capital of Austria’s cityscape is characterised by grand imperial architecture, verdant public parks, cosy coffee houses and an extra smattering of magnificent palaces. A local guide takes you around in the afternoon and shows off some of Vienna’s most lovely locations, including the landmark-lined Ringstrasse. This boulevard is where you can see some of the sights you may recognise from postcards – Vienna State Opera, the Hofburg, Parliament and Burgtheater. You have ample time in the days that follow to see and explore even more of Vienna on your own terms, no matter if you have your eye on ticking off the city’s world-class museums, the extravagant Schonbrunn Palace, or the vineyard-strewn Wachau Valley region along the Danube.

The final stop of your European tour is Budapest. Travel to the Hungarian capital via direct train service and embark on a guided walking excursion around the city to get your bearings and begin uncovering the joys of Budapest. There is a staggering number of things to do and see in Budapest. After all, this actually used to be two separate cities – Buda and Pest – and the opportunities for travellers today spans both banks of the Danube. Dip a toe into one of the city’s famed thermal baths, amble between stalls at the neo-Gothic Central Market Hall on the lookout for souvenirs, grab a table at one of the ruin bars, and take in the views from the terrace at Fisherman’s Bastion.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff – Munich

Depart on your flight to Munich in Germany day and get ready to undertake your fantastic tour of Eastern Europe!

Day 2: Munich

You arrive in Munich and will be picked up from the airport for a hotel transfer. There is no itinerary for today and you have the remainder of the day as free time. Use it to relax in your hotel room, or start seeing the sights of this beautiful Bavarian city. Some of the things to see in Munich include Marienplatz, English Garden, Munich Residenz and the Alte Pinakothek, one of the world’s oldest art galleries.

For those purchasing the Tour Only option, your tour starts today. Please make your own way to the hotel.

Day 3: Munich – train-icon Prague (B)

Take breakfast at the hotel and then be transferred to the railway station in time to catch your train to Prague. You reach the capital of the Czech Republic to find a private vehicle transfer waiting to take you to the hotel. There is some free time for lunch and you then meet a local guide for an afternoon outing around the ‘City of a Hundred Spires’. This walking tour sees you stroll around Prague’s Old Town and amble past the coterie of shops, cafes and churches. You have the evening at leisure following the tour.

Day 4: Prague (B)

You have today as free time to explore Prague at your own pace. You might set out on discovering more about the city’s neighbourhoods. Wander across Charles Bridge to Mala Strana and discover the area in what, in English, translates to ‘lesser town’. Head to the riverfront strip beneath the bridge to explore the wealth of restaurants and cafes located here. Prague Castle also overlooks the Mala Strana.

Optional: Prague Beer and Czech Tapas Tour. Additional cost applies.

Day 5: Prague (B)

Continue discovering the charms of Prague at your leisure today.

Optional: Prague Beer and Czech Tapas Tour. Additional cost applies.

Day 6: Prague – Cesky Krumlov (B)

You depart Prague this morning and hop into a private vehicle for the drive to Cesky Krumlov. This UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed town looks as though it was pulled straight from the pages of a fairytale; all well-preserved medieval houses, cobbled stones and a striking castle looming in the background. You check into your hotel upon arrival and then head out into town to meet a local guide, who will take you around Cesky Krumlov and offer insight into local traditional, folklore and stories. You’ll also be able to get your bearings; excellent know-how for when you have independent exploration!

Day 7: Cesky Krumlov (B)

Today is at your leisure and you have the entire day to see Cesky Krumlov however you like. You might opt to have a lazy morning and simply stroll around the streets, or you might venture to the castle to take in its heritage architecture and immaculate grounds. It is the second-largest castle in the Czech Republic, and visitors should be sure to peer into the castle moat as they cross to see the bears (yes, real bears!) that are kept here as per tradition. Find your way to a riverfront restaurant or eatery to enjoy a meal while looking out across the water, or nab a table at one of the town’s beer gardens to sip at a Czech brew.

Day 8: Cesky Krumlov – Vienna (B)

Continue to Vienna this morning. The glittering Austrian capital is as elegant as it is rich with history and culture. You have some free time for lunch once arrived in Vienna, and in the afternoon,  you meet a local guide who will show you around the city’s centre on an introductory walking tour. Use this time to delve deeper into the legacy of the Hapsburgs and to tick off seeing the landmarks that line the famed Ringstrasse. Some of the builds you can expect to see include City Hall, Vienna State Opera, Burgtheater and the Austrian Parliament Building. The rest of the day following the tour is yours as free time. Find a cosy restaurant to sink your teeth into a dinner of wiener schnitzel and crisp apple strudel.

Day 9: Vienna (B)

The day is yours to travel about Vienna however you like. Learn more about the city’s imperial history by visiting one of its grand palaces – Hofburg or Schonbrunn – and peeking into opulent state rooms and former royal apartments. The grounds at Schonbrunn Palace are exquisite and also house immaculate botanic gardens, maze and zoo. Pair a love of history with art by making a beeline for Belvedere Palace and the incredible collection housed inside. Meander the stalls and restaurants that make up Vienna Naschmarkt, a market with beginnings that stretch back to the 16th century; or hop into one of the cabins of the Ferris wheel at Prater, an old-world amusement park with nostalgic carnival games and rides.

Optional: Urban Adventures – Vienna Food, Coffee and Market Tour. Additional cost applies.

Day 10: Vienna (B)

Another day to keep discovering Vienna. You might venture outside the city limits into the Wachau Valley, one of Austria’s top wine-producing regions, and take this time to see any other charming towns along the Danube. Find a local bakery or coffee house, either in Vienna or on the outskirts, to savour an indulgent slice (or two) of traditional Austrian cakes and pastries – sachertorte, Gugelhupf, linzer torte and Kardinal cake.

Optional: Urban Adventures – Vienna Food, Coffee and Market Tour. Additional cost applies.

Day 11: Vienna – train-icon Budapest (B)

Today the group moves to its next destination: Budapest. You will be taken to the train station to catch a direct service to the Hungarian capital. A private driver meets you at the other end and takes you to the hotel for check in. Waste no time in heading out to tee up with a local guide for a walk around this beautiful city. Amble past the tree-lined Andrassy Avenue, and gaze up at the spires of St. Stephen Basilica. Capture the glory of the Parliament Building, gawk at the wares on offer inside the Great Market Hall, and cross the river via the Chain Bridge to explore both sides of the Danube.

Day 12: Budapest (B)

You have today as complete free time in Budapest. Slip into your swimmers for a visit to one of the city’s most visited attractions: the thermal baths. There are a smattering of baths across Budapest, including Szechenyi, Gellert and Rudas. Discover some of the city’s history at Buda Castle and admire the collections of Hungarian art, rent a pedal cart to circumnavigate Margaret Island, appreciate the architecture of the Dohany Street Synagogue, or work your way between some of the city’s famous ruin pubs.

Optional: Urban Adventures – Best Beers of Budapest. Additional cost applies.

Day 13: Budapest – Australia (B)

You have one last breakfast at the hotel and then are free to check out at any time. Make your way to the airport at the necessary time to catch your flight back to Australia.
