Highlights

Experience the pinnacle of China’s landmarks and landscapes on a 14 day Ultimate China tour with 5-star Yangtze River cruise.

Take a moment to appreciate the legacy of Tiananmen Square as you stand in the centre of this immense public plaza, and fall under the spell of the Forbidden City as you venture into this mysterious realm that was once reserved only for emperors and members of the imperial courts. Take a bite out of Beijing cuisine with a lunch of Peking duck, and lace up your walking shoes when it comes time to tred the ancient steps and stones of the Great Wall of China at Juyong Pass. Wander the grounds of the resplendent Summer Palace to admire its lakes and gardens, and board a high-speed train to reach the cosmopolitan heart of China in Shanghai. Uncover the colonial legacy of the city as you look in at exhibits and artefacts inside Shanghai Museum and then meander along the famed Bund. Shanghai’s best-known promenade is lined with examples of English- and French-style architecture.

Fly to Xi’an, a former ancient capital of China, and waste no time learning about the city’s long-stretching history; first at the Shaanxi Museum and then by making trips to see the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, Daci’en Temple and the old city walls. Of course, no visit to Xi’an is complete without marvelling at the statues and figures of the Terracotta Army. Be in awe as you gaze across the thousands of soldiers, archers and chariots, and uncover more about the history, purpose and ongoing work that surround this incredible site.

Step aboard the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer from the private port in Yichang to embark on your spectacular cruise of the Yangtze River. Settle into a Deluxe Cabin with private balcony, and indulge in world-class cuisine of East-meets-West fares while cruising. A program of shore excursions takes you to the Three Gorges Dam Project Site, Shennong Stream and Fuling, while the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer’s voyage sees you sail through breathtakingly beautiful gorges, past craggy cliff faces and along still sections of water. Make sure you pencil in time to take up some of the on-board activities too; turning your hand to calligraphy, dumpling making, reflexology and morning Tai chi sessions, among others.

Put off returning home just a while longer by extending your time in China to a 16 day itinerary that has you travel to Chengdu to see the Leshan Giant Buddha and Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

This world-famous sight is not only one of the largest public plazas in the world, but it has incredible historical and cultural significance. It’s long-stretching history borders on legend and having a chance to walk along this famed fortification is something that tops many a traveller’s bucket list. You get to do just so today. The return trip back to Beijing has you visit one of the largest jade exhibitions in Asia and a cloisonné museum.

Day 4: Beijing – train-icon – Shanghai (B, L)

Afterwards, the group makes a visit to a Chinese Herbal Institute to discover more about traditional Chinese medicine and this ancient healing practice. You then head to the railway station to board a high-speed train that will take you to Shanghai. A hotel transfer awaits your arrival.

Day 5: Shanghai (B)

Your first visit of the day is the Shanghai Museum; a great way to learn more about the history and culture of this dynamic city, which is now the largest in China. Take a walk along the waterfront Bund and admire the views over the Huangpu River as well as the examples of colonial architecture that line this famous promenade. It is then onto a silk factory to see the manufacturer process of this glorious textile, and you then have the afternoon to wander the pedestrian area around Chenghuang Temple (also known as City God Temple of Shanghai) at your leisure.

Additional cost applies.

Day 7: Shanghai – airplane-takeoff – Xi’an (B, L)

A transfer takes you to the airport after breakfast, and you board a short one-way flight to Xi’an. Head to the Shaanxi Museum after you arrive and learn more about this new destination by perusing the museum’s collection of more than 370,000 artefacts and relics. Sit down to a delicious lunch of Xi’an-style handmade noodles, and then continue to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and Daci’en Temple to view both landmarks from the outside. Marvel at the views offered from the old city walls (some sections date back to the Ming dynasty) afterwards.

Day 8: Xi’an (B, L)

A trip to Xi’an’s most visited sight is on the cards for today. The Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum is informally known as the Terracotta Army, and this famed UNESCO World Heritage Site was only rediscovered in 1974 – despite having been standing at attention since 210 BC. Learn about the army’s creation and purpose, and get up close to some of the statues to admire each figure’s unique features. The site’s excavation is an ongoing process as some experts believe there are still more statues to uncover.

Optional: Tang Dynasty Show with Dumpling Banquet Dinner
Additional cost applies.

Day 9: Xi’an – train-icon – Wuhan – Yichang – Yangtze River Cruise (B, D)

After breakfast, transfer to the railway station and catch a high-speed train travelling to Wuhan. You are met upon arrival and are whisked to the private cruise port at Yichang (a journey of about four to five hours). Before arriving at the cruise port, your group will stop at a local restaurant for dinner along the way. Once at the port, you will step foot aboard the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer, the luxury cruise ship that will be your home as you navigate the waters of the beautiful Yangtze River. Settle into your Deluxe Cabin and become familiar with the facilities on-board. All cabins boast private balconies and the ship itself has a high staff-to-passenger ratio.

Day 10: Yangtze River Cruise (B, L, D) cruise-icon

Early risers can partake in a traditional Tai chi session to work up an appetite before breakfast. All of your meals while cruising are included, and you can expect to dine from menus featuring a mix of Eastern and Western cuisines. There is a daily afternoon tea, as well as some banquet meals. When you’re not dining on world-class cuisine or headed off on shore excursions, take up one of the classes or experiences on offer while aboard, such as dumpling making, calligraphy and reflexology. Otherwise there is a morning lecture on the Three Gorges Project that interested passengers can attend to learn more about the site of today’s excursion. There is also a demonstration on Chinese foot reflexology held in the Tang Theatre. The outing to the Three Gorges Dam project site departs after lunch and offers great insight into this controversial work, as well as an opportunity to admire its engineering innovation. Return to the boat and opt to attend a lecture on traditional Chinese medicine. You might also choose to unwind on your cabin’s private balcony and take in the landscape as the ship sails through the Xiling Gorge, the longest of the Three Gorges. Tonight there is a Captain’s Welcome reception that includes an a la carte dinner and live music.

Day 11: Yangtze River Cruise (B, L, D) cruise-icon

Today’s shore excursion ventures to Shennong Stream while in a sampan, a traditional longboat manned by skilled Tujia locals. Take in the beauty of this riverine gorge as you gently glide through the water and keep eyes peeled for the Hanging Coffins that cling to the cliff faces. Return to the ship for lunch and then perhaps head out to the deck to have an unobstructed view as the ship cruises through the Wu and Qutang Gorges. Take up one of the afternoon or evening activities, such as lectures and a film screening.

Day 12: Yangtze River Cruise (B, L, D) cruise-icon

Those travelling in mid-March to May or mid-September to November can take up one of two shore excursions: to see the 816 Underground Project or to the White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum. The former is the world’s largest manmade military cave and is tucked away in the Fuling mountains. The constriction of the cave was top secret and saw more than 60,000 workers arrive into the area. The cave was built over a period of 17 years but was suspended by the government before it could be finished.

The latter excursion, to the White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum, takes you 148-feet underwater to view the river bed and its rock carvings. This is followed by a visit to a local market where you’ll be able to savour example of the region’s rich culinary offering, including the pickles for which Fuling is so well known.

Travellers sailing outside of these times are free to relax in their balconies and continue to make use of the ship’s on-board activities and facilities. A farewell dinner is put on for all travellers tonight, as this is your final evening of the cruise and the last night of your China tour.

Day 13: Yangtze River Cruise – Chongqing – airplane-takeoff – Australia (B)

The ship docks in Chongqing and you disembark. A transfer then takes you to the airport where you board a plane and begin your return journey home.
