Beijing is brimming with world-famous landmarks and an incredibly rich history; both of which you will discover as you stand in the centre of Tiananmen Square and tour the Forbidden City. Strap on your sturdiest walking shoes to tackle a section of the Great Wall of China and journey to Jinan to see the city’s top sights before winding up in Tai’an.
Feel inspired by the beauty of the West Lake landscape in Hangzhou, meander through the Master of the Nets Garden in Suzhou, and stroll along the waterfront of Shanghai. Also explore the longest river in Asia, the Yangtze, from aboard a luxury cruise ship for four nights. Enjoy excursions to hill-perched temples and pagodas along the way, or simply relax on deck and soak in the passing landscape.

Optional: Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City
Join your trip leader and head to Tiananmen Square. Admire this grand public plaza’s enormity as you stand in its centre, and then enter the grounds of the Forbidden City. Once the strict realm of emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Forbidden City is a sprawling complex of imperial palaces, courtyards and opulent rooms. Additional cost applies.

Travel to the mountainous landscape north of Beijing to China’s most symbolic sight: the Great Wall of China. You will scramble up a section of this ancient defensive structure and learn about its history as you admire the sweeping views. Stop off at a jade factory on the return journey to Beijing and visit some of the stadiums used for the 2008 Summer Olympics, including the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube. An end-of-day reward comes in the form of a restorative foot massage at a centre for traditional Chinese medicine.

A day of leisure to discover Tai’an at your own pace.

Travel by bullet train to Hangzhou and then head out on a city tour upon arrival. As well as being the political, economic and cultural centre of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou is also the location of West Lake. This area has long entranced artists, poets and other creatives who have drawn inspiration from the surrounding temples, pagodas, pavilions and gardens. As well as admiring the natural beauty of the area for yourself, there is also a visit to a local tea plantation where you can learn about how green tea is hand-picked and pan-fried.

Seek out Suzhou and explore the Master of the Nets Garden, a quintessential example of classic Chinese garden design.
