Make for the treasures of the Middle Kingdom with a 10 day Wonders of China tour.

There is so much to see, do and experience in China’s capital city of Beijing that it can be confusing as to where to start. This tour itinerary begins on a high note however, taking you straight to Tiananmen Square. This epic public plaza is one of the largest in the world and has acted as the background to some of the most prolific events in China’s modern history. Take a moment to stand in its centre to truly appreciate its scale, and see the attractions lined up around the square’s fringe – the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong and the National Museum of China. It is then onto a local freshwater pearl workshop to learn about this glinting treasures – and perhaps find the perfect souvenir for friends and family back home. Another jewel in Beijing’s crown, though it is located just outside the city, is the emblematic Great Wall of China. Travel out to the Juyong Pass section of the Great Wall and relish the chance to climb a portion of this iconic defensive structure. Learn about the ancient practice of alternative healing on a visit to a Chinese Herbal Institute, and have some free time in one of Beijing’s sprawling shopping malls to indulge in retail therapy before boarding a bullet train to Tai’an.

Your time in Tai’an is used for an outing to the Mount Tai Scenic Area (also called Mount Taishan). This UNESCO World Heritage Site was worshipped by an imperial cult for almost 2000 years, and has long served as a source of inspiration for local artists and scholars. It is the most sacred mountain in China and is home to a handful of key monuments, including temples, inscriptions and stone tablets. Afterwards, head to Suzhou aboard a bullet train and meander the city’s tapestry of canals, bridges and pagodas. There is also a visit to the magnificent Lingering Garden, plus a stop at the largest silk manufacturer in China. The final destination of your China tour is the cosmopolitan epicentre that is Shanghai. This is both China’s biggest city and its commercial hub. Visitors will find a city whose skyline blends the colonial with the contemporary and East with West. Amble along the Bund, the waterfront promenade that hugs the Huangpu River, as you take in the juxtaposed skyline. Visit a local tea house to sip dragon well tea, and gain insight into the city’s history with the exhibits and artefacts inside the Shanghai Museum.
