Highlights

Be in awe of snow-capped peaks, deep river canyons and verdant country-scapes as you travel onboard an 11 day Best of the Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer tour.

This stunningly scenic experience begins in Vancouver, the beloved seaport city that boasts a picture-perfect location of being nestled between the mountains and the water. It is then time to step onboard legendary Rocky Mountaineer. This railway is the embodiment of luxurious train travel. All carriages, no matter SilverLeaf Service or GoldLeaf Service, are kitted out with huge windows; offering unobstructed views from your seat and out to the landscape beyond. The first day of travel onboard Rocky Mountaineer takes you from Vancouver to Kamloops, and some of the sights to see as you partake in your complimentary meals, snacks and beverages include Fraser River valley, Coast and Cascade mountains, and the Thompson River. The second day of Rocky Mountaineer voyage transports you to the Banff area, but not before you admire the beauty of the mighty Rockies, including Alberta ranchlands, Kicking Horse Canyon, the Spiral Tunnels, glaciers and looming mountain peaks along the way.

Following a free day around Banff, the group begins its return journey to Vancouver. This route encompasses some of the Canadian Rockies’ most recognisable sights, such as spectacular Lake Louise. Your eyes are in for a treat with time in Yoho, Glacier and Revelstoke National Parks. Plus there is opportunity for further stops at Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge, Spiral Train Tunnels and Rogers Pass. Another day on the itinerary sees you savour the tastes of the Okanagan Region – one of Canada’s most acclaimed food and wine-producing areas – as you weave between samplings at local wineries and snack stops at road-side fruit stalls. The final home stretch to Vancouver is studded with time in the town of Hope and traversing the Othello Tunnels.

Experience a train journey full of extraordinary moments. An inside look at travel onboard Rocky Mountaineer:

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff  Vancouver

Fly out of Australia and land in Vancouver. A Webjet representative will greet you and help with the transfer to the hotel.

Please note that some flights may depart one day earlier.

For those purchasing the Tour Only option, your tour starts today. Please make your own way to the hotel.

Day 2: Vancouver (B)

You have the entire day to relax at the hotel or get out into the city and begin discovering the charms of this West Coast metropolis.

Day 3: Rocky Mountaineer First Passage of the West – Vancouver – train-iconKamloops (B, L)

A private coach picks you up from the hotel and transfers you to the Rocky Mountaineer station. Be welcomed onboard by Rocky Mountaineer hosts and settle into your seat as the train pulls out of Vancouver and begins the first leg of the First Passage to the West route towards Kamloops. Look out of the mammoth windows to fully take in the stunning scenery as it passes by. Some of the sights you can expect to see include dark green forests and deep valleys, winding river canyons and thundering waterways. Look out for the peaks of the Coast and Cascade mountains, the power of Hell’s Gate in Fraser Canyon, and the pretty banks of Kamloops Lake. The train arrives in Kamloops, a city perched on the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers, in the evening.

Day 4: Rocky Mountaineer First Passage of the West – Kamloops – train-icon– Banff Area (Canmore) (B, L)

The second leg of the Rocky Mountaineer’s First Passage of the West route starts as you are collected from the hotel and transferred to the train station. Resume your position in your selected carriage and enjoy breakfast as the train begins its scenic sojourn into the Banff area. The beauty of the heart of the Canadian Rockies lies just beyond the window on your travels today, and a look outside will see you spy Craigellachie, the location of the final spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway, as well as Rogers Pass, Kicking Horse Canyon, the Spiral Tunnels and many a snow-capped mountain summit. Your time on the Rocky Mountaineer concludes as the train pulls into Banff. Say goodbye to your new-found rail travel friends and meet up with the Webjet private coach for the transfer to your hotel.

Day 5: Banff Area (Canmore) (B)

Make the most of an entire day of leisure time. Choose to head into Banff aboard one of the shuttle services from Canmore (departing every 30 minutes) or strap on your walking shoes to hit one of the trails and hikes in the surrounding area. Another option is to take a drive along the Icefields Parkway, bound for the Columbia Icefield, one of the largest accumulations of ice south of the Arctic Circle.

Optional: Ice Explorer onto Athabasca Glacier
Take up the opportunity for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, heading out onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier aboard Ice Explorer. The Ice Explorer is an all-terrain vehicle that has been specially designed for glacial travel. This excursion is led by a knowledgeable driver-guide who will share their broad knowledge about glaciers, the icefield and environmental impact upon the landscape. Please note this activity must be booked prior to departure from Australia. Additional cost applies.

Day 6: Banff Area – Lake Louise – Vernon (B)

A jam-packed itinerary for today’s adventure. Follow the Trans-Canada Highway from Banff to the banks of Lake Louise. This glittering lake is commonly referred to as the ‘Diamond in the Wilderness’ and is quickly recognisable thanks to the numerous postcards it features on. Other highlights on today’s agenda include Yoho National park, Glacier National Park and Mount Revelstoke National Park. Additional stops may cover Emerald Lake, Natural Bridge, Spiral Train Tunnels and Rogers Pass. The group arrives in Vernon in the evening and has the remainder of the day as free time.

Day 7: Vernon – Okanagan Valley (B)

Enjoy a full day discovering the riches of the Okanagan Valley Region. Venture into the heart of this acclaimed wine-producing region and opt to stop at some of the local wineries for a tasting of recent vintages. You will also notice the scattering of fresh fruit stands along the highway. Plus there is an abundance of farmers’ markets, fruit farms and orchard tours in the area. Tonight you will stay in the Okanagan Valley area.

Day 8: Okanagan Valley – Vancouver (Richmond) (B)

Today marks your last day of coach travel in Canada and the final stretch to Vancouver. Along the way the group will visit the town of Hope and make a pitstop at the Othello Tunnels, a network of train tunnels and bridges that cut through granite walls and pass over the Coquihalla River. The evening is yours as free time once the group arrives in Vancouver (Richmond).

Day 9: Vancouver – airplane-takeoff  Australia (B)

Take breakfast at the hotel and then make your own way to the airport to begin the return journey to Australia.

Tipping:

Towards the end of your tour:

If you have enjoyed the knowledge, service and expertise of your tour guide and driver a tip (while not compulsory) is appropriate towards the end of your tour. While it may not be customary in Australia, tipping is entrenched into many cultures especially within the tourism industry globally. It helps reward and inspire excellent service. The following is provided to assist our guests, but we leave the decision to provide a gratuity entirely at their discretion:

The group leader: Our past guests have left gratuities based on their overall service of CAD $6 per person per day

The driver & assistant:  Our past guests have left gratuities based on their overall service of CAD $4 per person per day

Tipping on Rocky Mountaineer:

SilverLeaf Service $35-$45 per person (approx. AUD$37-$AUD47 per person)
GoldLeaf Service $40-$50 per person (approx. AUD$42-$AUD52 per person)

Amounts are in Canadian dollars and are based on one person travelling for the duration of a trip.

Gratuities aren’t compulsory on your trip, but they can make a big difference to locals employed in the tourism industry. Your guide will hand around two envelopes towards the end of the tour (1 Tour Guide and 1 Driver envelope) to make the process as easy as possible.

Health: Different levels of travel involve varying degrees of activity and we recommend a good level of fitness and health in order to fully experience the package and some of the optional tours purchased. It remains each passenger’s responsibility to inform Webjet Exclusives of any health or mobility issues that may impact the running of the tour, both for the safety of the passenger concerned and for other travellers in the group.
