Highlights

Uncover the culture, history and ancient sights of this magical destination on a 10 day Highlights of Cambodia tour with flights.

Your first stop within Cambodia is Siem Reap, a city that puts you tantalising close to what is arguably the country’s most legendary sight – the temples of Angkor. This sprawling complex is known across the world and is the most visited site in Cambodia. Your itinerary devotes an entire day to its discovery, and you will be guided around its temples and landmarks to learn more about its history, mythology and cultural significance. You will visit the emblematic Angkor Wat (it is the site featured on the Cambodian national flag, after all!), as well as other landmarks such as Ta Prohm, Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom, the Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King.

There is another day of free time in Siem Reap ahead of a short domestic flight to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. You’ll learn about a period in Cambodia’s more recent history by travelling out to the killing fields of Choeung Ek and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Both of these sobering sites provide a chance to learn and hear about the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge regime. These stops are part of a sightseeing itinerary that also shows you the city’s Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, National Museum and Wat Ounalom. Keen market-goers will particularly love the time spent at Phnom Penh’s Central Market, an Art Deco landmark that is a hive of hallways bursting with stalls proffering everything from dried and fresh food, to clothing, jewellery and knick-knacks that make for great keepsakes.

The final location of your Cambodia tour is Kep. This seaside resort town was originally established by the French colonialists in the early 1900s and was intended to be a blissful retreat from the cities. Appreciate this Francophile influence as you walk Kep’s wide streets and past former villas (many of which have fallen into disrepair) and other heritage structures. Your time in Kep is your own and those wanting to fill their day with more sightseeing can explore the local crab market, visit a nearby national park, or take a trip out to any of the isles dotted along the coastline. On the other hand, the peaceful atmosphere of Kep makes it a destination perfect for unwinding, relaxing and doing not much at all.

Extend your time away by opting for a 12 day itinerary to include two additional nights in Kampot, another sleepy seaside town close to Kep.

Please note, if you choose to purchase the 13 day itinerary, your tour will include a 3 night stopover in Singapore at the start of your holiday.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff – Siem Reap

Make your own way to the airport with plenty of time to spare and board a flight to Siem Reap in Cambodia. A transfer will be awaiting your arrival once your plane lands and will take you to the hotel for check in. This city is the launching pad of the Angkor region (including the eponymous temples) and is one of the most popular cities to visit for travellers to Cambodia. Use tonight to begin your discovery of local Cambodian cuisine by sampling some of the street food, such as lort cha (fried egg noodles with veggies and egg), num pang (a Cambodian baguette filled with pork, ham or beef), deep fried bread with shrimp, and barbecued skewers of beef, squid and more.

Day 2: Siem Reap (B, L)

Wake up this morning excited with anticipation about what today’s sightseeing holds – the magical temples of Angkor! This archaeological site is one of the most important of its kind in South East Asia and marks the location of a former capital of the ancient Khmer Empire. The temples scattered around the sprawling complex are among some of the most famous in the world, and the towers of Angkor Wat (arguably the most well-known and iconic of the temples) even feature on the Cambodian flag. Learn about the symbology and mythology of Angkor Wat, the importance of its design, and the role it played in ancient society. Another site you’ll visit while in Angkor is Ta Prohm, known for the giant fig trees and green creepers that have wound around this brilliant stone structure. You will also see Angkor Thom, the South Gate, Bayon Temple, the Royal Enclosure, Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. It is a big day and making sure to wear comfortable and sturdy walking shoes will be key! Lunch is included today. You return to Siem Reap afterwards and have the evening at leisure.

Day 3: Siem Reap (B)

Today is yours as free time to explore Siem Reap. Learn more about the history of the city and wider region at the Angkor National Museum, peruse for souvenirs in the Old Market, get an introduction to the legacy of the Khmer Rouge at Cambodia Landmine Museum, or find your way to the tracks at Kulen Nature Trails to trek through rainforest to ancient temples, monasteries and hidden waterfalls.

Optional: Tonle Sap half-day tour.

Head to Kompong Phluk before hopping on-board a traditional wooden boat through Tonle Sap lake to discover the local floating village. Additional cost applies.

Optional: Banteay Srei and Tonle Sap Lake with lunch.

Rise this morning to drive to the famous Banteay Srei, before continuing on to Bakong Temple and Kompong Phluk, a place peppered with traditional homes. The villages are primarily Khmer and have around 3000 inhabitants between them, most of who live in stilted houses. The people depend largely on fishing and tourism for their incomes. Embark on a traditional wooden boat through the Tonle Sap lake as you explore this incredible floating city. Additional cost applies.

Day 4: Siem Reap – airplane-takeoff – Phnom Penh (B)

Make the most of this morning with some more free time in Siem Reap (perhaps using it to visit one of the city’s famed spas!) ahead of a transfer to the airport where you catch a short flight to Phnom Penh. You will be met upon arrival in the Cambodian capital and escorted to the hotel for check in. The rest of the day is yours as independent exploration.

Day 5: Phnom Penh (B, L)

Head out on a guided sightseeing trip around Phnom Penh today. The first stop on the itinerary are the killing fields of Choeung Ek to learn about the brutalities of the Khmer Rouge regime that occurred here. Lunch is taken at a local restaurant, and the group then continues to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Housed in former school building, the museum was once a notorious Khmer Rouge prison. Other sights to follow around Phnom Penh include the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, National Museum and Wat Ounalom. The final stop of the outing is Central Market, a great place to shop for souvenirs for friends and family back home.

Day 6: Phnom Penh – Kep (B)

You have free time in the morning until it is time to set out on the drive to Kep (about two-and-a-half hours). You check into the hotel upon arrival and have the rest of the day to relax, unwind and begin to soak up the charms of this seaside town. Originally established as retreat for the French colonialists in the early 1900s, Kep today is popular with travellers wanting to soak up the seaside atmosphere and the historical charms of the heritage streetscapes. The nearby Kep National Park is a major draw thanks to its populations of butterflies, and other things to do around Kep include a bustling crab market, Wat Samathi Pagoda, and the smattering of isles that lie just off the mainland coast, including Rabbit Island.

Day 7: Kep (B)

Have today as free time to explore more of Kep, or make the trip to nearby Kampot. This sleepy town is slightly removed from the well-tred tourist path and is home to streets lined with a mix of French and Chinese colonial architecture, a riverfront promenade with great views of the Elephant mountains, and a collection of cosy cafes and excellent restaurants.

Optional: Kep Caves tour.

Visit the limestone caves of Kampong Trach, located 35 km northeast from Kep. Inside the cave you’ll find a reclining Buddha, a small lake a well as the remains of brick temple dating back to the 7th century. Additional cost applies.

Day 8: Kep (B)

You have another day to use as free time. This is your last full day in Cambodia before beginning the return journey home, so maximise this opportunity to savour more delicious Cambodian cuisine, learn more about local culture, and tick off any sights or experiences not yet had.

Day 9: Kep – Phnom Penh – airplane-takeoff – Australia (B)

A transfer collects your from Kep and takes you to the airport in Phnom Penh in time for you to board your flight back to Australia.
