Highlights

Encounter vibrant local cultures, amazing natural sites and ancient history in two of South East Asia’s most beautiful destinations on a 14 day Vietnam and Cambodia Discovery tour.

Get your first taste of Vietnam as you land in Hanoi and then travel through the rich Red River Delta landscape on the way to Halong Bay. Spend a night cruising the waters of this UNESCO World Heritage Site aboard a traditional Vietnamese junk and make trips to the limestone islands and tucked-away grottoes. Return to Hanoi and be shown its most notable landmarks ahead of travelling south to Hoi An, a pretty-as-a-picture town known for its riverfront promenade, heritage architecture and French-influenced good looks. Continue your path south, this time towards Ho Chi Minh City. Learn about the historical and cultural significance of the Cu Chi Tunnels, and see other important landmarks around former Saigon, including Notre Dame Cathedral, War Remnants Museum and Ben Thanh Market.

Fly across the border from Vietnam to Cambodia and land in Siem Reap. This city is your springboard for a day at Cambodia’s most visited tourist site: the temples of Angkor. Feel your eyes widen as you explore this magnificent place; discovering more about its beginnings as the capital of the ancient Khmer Empire and filling your camera roll with photos of Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm and the Elephant Terrace. Journey through the rural Cambodian countryside on the drive to Phnom Penh. Arrive in the capital city and take a sombre step back into the legacy of the Khmer Rouge as you visit sites associated with this brutal regime.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff – Hanoi

Make your way to the airport and board a flight to the capital city of Vietnam, Hanoi. A hotel transfer awaits your arrival at airport and escorts you to the accommodation for check in. You have the rest of the day as leisure, no matter if you prefer to relax in your room or get out to explore the neighbourhood around the hotel.

Day 2: Hanoi – Halong Bay (B, L, D) cruise-icon

Leave the frenetic pace of Hanoi behind as you travel through the landscape of the Red River Delta towards Halong Bay for your overnight cruise through the famed emerald waters. The bay is perhaps one of Vietnam’s most recognisable and visited UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and is known for its sprinkling of small limestone islands and hidden grottoes. You step aboard a traditional Vietnamese junk and set sail, visiting some of the caves and grottoes until the sun sets and you have dinner on-board.

Day 3: Halong Bay – Hanoi (B, L)  cruise-icon

Those keen on starting the day early can partake in a morning Tai chi session on the boat’s sundeck, or those inclined for a lay-in can stay in bed until it’s time to hop into smaller rowboats and make the trip out to some of the bay’s smaller islands. You might also flex your photography muscles by getting up in time to see sunrise. The group returns to the main junk to have breakfast on-board and the boat then makes its way back to the jetty where your driver waits. Set out on the drive back to Hanoi and arrive in the afternoon. The remainder of the day is yours as free time.

Optional: Hanoi Street Food Tour. Get a taste for the famed flavours of Hanoi’s street food with this experience. Go on a walk through the city’s Old Quarter and savour tastings of some of the city’s best bites, including stuffed pancakes, banh mi, sticky rice balls and egg coffee. Dinner is included in this experience. Additional cost applies.

Day 4: Hanoi –airplane-takeoff Danang – Hoi An (B, L)

Be shown Hanoi’s top sights and landmarks on a city tour this morning. Some of the stops on this excursion include the Temple of Literature, Tran Quoc Pagoda, and the buildings within the Ho Chi Minh Complex such as the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and One Pillar Pagoda. Following the tour, the group is transferred to the airport for a short flight south to Da Nang. This resort city is a launching pad for visitors wanting to see Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed town beloved for its heritage facades, riverfront promenade and pretty streetscapes. A transfer takes you to the Hoi An hotel for check in and the rest of the day is free time.

Optional: Hoi An Cooking Class. Get hands-on with the techniques and flavours that go into Vietnamese cuisine as you learn how to prepare some classic dishes. A professional chef will share their top tips and tricks, and you get to feast on the fruits of your labour at the end of the class. Additional cost applies.

Optional: O Show. Attend this theatrical performance that documents life in rural Vietnam through sketches and acts using traditional cultural props. Additional cost applies.

Day 5: Hoi An (B)

The day is yours to explore and experience Hoi An however you like.

Optional: Golden Bridge. Travel to the foot of the Ba Na hills and ride a cable car up to the Marseille station for your chance to walk along the newly-opened Golden Bridge. The design of this bridge was intended to make visitors feel as though they are walking among the clouds. The next stop of this outing is to Le Jardin d’Amour to wander the nine landscaped gardens (all laid-out in different styles and telling different stories). Finally, visit Linh Ung Pagoda before heading back to Hoi An. Additional cost applies.

Day 7: Ho Chi Minh City – Cu Chi Tunnels (B, L)

Have breakfast at the hotel and then travel out of the city to the Cu Chi Tunnels. This network of underground passages and tunnels is notorious for its role in the Vietnam War conflict; it was used by Viet Cong and Viet Minh fighters to engage in guerrilla warfare. The tunnels doubled as military and living quarters too. Learn about the tunnels’ grisly history, look in at artefacts from the war, and hear stories about how the war impacted local life. In the afternoon, the group returns to Ho Chi Minh City to be shown around some of its most prominent landmarks, such as Notre Dame Cathedral, Central Saigon Post Office, the War Remnants Museum and the ever-lively Ben Thanh Market.

Day 8: Ho Chi Minh City (B)

You have an entire day of free time to take up everything Ho Chi Minh City offers, no matter if you want to visit the museums, people-watch in a local park, savour the city’s best street food, or peruse for souvenirs at local markets. Tonight is your final evening in Vietnam.

Optional: Mekong Delta. Travel outside of the city into the landscape of the Mekong Delta. Board a cruise along the Ben Tre River and stop at a brickworks to discover the traditional practice of printing and baking bricks. Continue onto a coconut-processing workshop and then a rural village to see how sleeping mats are made. Take a rest to enjoy fresh fruits and tea before hopping into a motor cart or cycle for a trip past green rice and vegetable fields. Lunch is taken at a riverfront restaurant. Finally, hop into a rowboat to make the trip along a serene canal, and then return to the original boat to make the voyage back to Hung Vuong Pier. A transfer takes you back to Ho Chi Minh City. Additional cost applies.

Day 9: Ho Chi Minh City –airplane-takeoff – Siem Reap (B)

Breakfast is taken at the hotel and you are then transferred to the airport in time to catch your one-way flight from Vietnam into Cambodia. You land in Siem Reap, and a transfer awaits your arrival to take you to the hotel for check in. The rest of the day is yours as leisure time.

Day 10: Siem Reap – Angkor Temples   (B, L)

Your first excursion in Cambodia sees you encounter what is arguably the country’s most iconic sight: the temples of Angkor. This mystical complex was the former capital of the Khmer Empire and is home to the emblematic Angkor Wat, one of Cambodia’s most popular tourist attractions. Your time in Angkor begins at Angkor Wat, and you then move on to Ta Prohm. Some of the other sites within Angkor that you’ll encounter include the Elephant Terrace and the Leper King Terrace. Be sure to wear good shoes today as this outing requires a solid amount of walking. Lunch is included. You return to Siem Reap by evening and have the night at your leisure.

Day 11:  Siem Reap – Phnom Penh (B)

This morning is free time for you to explore or wander around Siem Reap however you like. Then, set out on the six-hour bus journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. The evening is leisure time.

Optional: Tonle Sap Lake. Explore the landscape around Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia. Visit the floating village of Kampong Kleang, which is perched on the banks of the lake and is largely overlooked by tourists. Admire the stilt-built houses and the views of floodplains, rice fields and watery outlooks. Meet some of the village residents, including a family who raise crocodiles. Continue by boat through the canals to a lake location where those displaced by seasonal weather conditions reside. Return to the hotel afterwards. Additional cost applies.

Day 12: Phnom Penh   (B, L)

Move between some of Phnom Penh’s top sights this morning – the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, National Museum and Wat Ounalom – and then make a stop at Central Market to look out for souvenirs and keepsakes. Have lunch and then attend a royal dance rehearsal by the Apsara Arts Association. This afternoon, the group delves into a saddening chapter of Cambodian history by visiting the site where journalists camped out on the eve of the Khmer Rouge takeover. There is a trip to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (housed in a school used by the brutal regime as a prison) and then to the Choeung Ek Killing Field. These sombre stops will shed light about the Khmer Rouge, the atrocities committed, and how Cambodia continues to move forward.

Day 13: Phnom Penh – airplane-takeoff – Australia (B)

You will be picked up from the hotel at the necessary time and taken to the airport, so you can set out on the return journey back to Australia.

Day 14: Australia

Arrive home today.
