Highlights

Venture into some of the most iconic national parks throughout Kenya and Tanzania on a spectacular 14 day East African Wildlife safari

Make for the legendary plains of Maasai Mara National Reserve upon landing in Nairobi and delight in having two nights at a tented camp near the park. The time you spend here includes multiple game drives at different times of day, so you won’t miss an opportunity to take in the reserve in all of its glory. Maasai Mara is a phenomenal place to start your African adventure as you travel throughout the park in a specially-designed safari vehicle equipped with a photo roof. Keen photographers in particular will love being able to stand up in the vehicle, courtesy of the roof, and snap away without being obstructed by glass reflections or other blocks. Plus, a window seat on every game drive throughout the trip is guaranteed so there is no issues over who is relegated to the middle seat! Just some of the game you may come across while at Maasai Mara include lions, cheetahs, elephant, leopards and hyena.

Make friends with the long-legged giants at the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi with a hand-feeding encounter, and literature-lovers can learn about the life of Karen Blixen – the author of Out of Africa – on a guided tour of her former home. Learn about the invaluable conservation work carried out by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Orphanage and see some of the orphaned elephants and rhinos rescued by the trust. Explore Amboseli National Park near the Kenya-Tanzania border and catch glimpses of free-ranging elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro on your game drive throughout the park. Travel to Tsavo West National Park in Kenya’s Coast Province and watch on as crocodiles and hippos sun themselves by the waters of Mzima Springs

Traverse the border from Kenya into Tanzania and head to the museum at the Tanzanite Experience to learn about this incredibly rare and precious gem. Enjoy a local lunch on a pitstop at Mta Wa Mbu Village and continue to Lake Manyara National Park for an afternoon drive that may see you come across more than 350 bird species, as well as Thomson’s gazelle, wildebeest, waterbuck, baboon, warthog and African bush elephant. Then use Karatu Town as a base for a magnificent all-day outing to Ngorongoro Crater. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one-of-a-kind; it is the largest inactive, unfilled and intact volcanic caldera in the world, and is also home to rare wildlife, including black rhinos. Ascend the crater and be rewarded with glorious panoramas that sweep across the breathtaking highlands landscape. Make one final game drive in Tarangire National Park to spy wildlife not yet seen, perhaps including vervet monkey, banded mongoose, caracal, honey badger, and African wild dog.

Please note, itinerary 1 is for departures 28 May, 4 June, 20 August, 8 October and 5 November. Difference between itinerary 1 and 2 relates to the routing of the tour between days 11 to 13, all inclusions and activities remain the same.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff  Nairobi

Make your way to the airport and board a flight to Nairobi in eager anticipation of beginning your incredible safari experience through Kenya and Tanzania!

Day 2: Nairobi

Welcome to Africa! Your flight lands in Nairobi and you are met upon arrival by a representative who will assist you with the transfer to your hotel.

Day 3: Nairobi – Maasai Mara National Reserve (B, L, D) lion-icon

Take breakfast at the hotel and then attend a short safari briefing where you will meet your driver guides. It is then time to clamber into your safari vehicle and drive south towards Maasai Mara National Reserve. Keep your eyes alert as you may tick off your first wildlife sighting before you even reach the reserve! The group arrives to the camp for lunch, and then sets out on an extraordinary game drive through the reserve. This drive is a phenomenal introduction to the Maasai Mara landscape and is an unrivalled location to begin your encounters with African wildlife. Maasai Mara National Reserve epitomises the famed landscape of the African savannah. The reserve is named in honour of its ancestral inhabitants, the Maasai people, and is home to a roll call of Africa’s most iconic creatures – lions, cheetahs, elephant, leopards and hyena. The renowned Great Migration, the moving of wildebeest, zebra and more between Kenya and Tanzania, also passes through the reserve. The group returns to camp in the early evening for dinner.

Day 4: Maasai Mara National Reserve (B, L, D) lion-icon

An early morning start won’t worry you at all as you head out again into Maasai Mara National Reserve for your first game drive of the day. Take note of the different animals you see at this time of day. All of your game drives on the tour are conducted in  specially designed vehicles conveniently fitted out with an aptly-named photo roof. This design allows safari-seekers to stand up within the vehicle and have a direct perspective out into the landscape – no glass windows or car doors to obscure those postcard-perfect photographs!

You will have some time upon return to camp to relax, unwind and share tales of your sightings with fellow travellers. But don’t get too comfortable as you’ll soon be jumping back into the cars for another afternoon game drive. Admire how the landscape shifts with the changing light, and keep a vigilant watch for any critters you’ve not yet seen.

Day 5: Maasai Mara National Reserve – Nairobi (B, L)

Have breakfast at camp and then begin the drive north towards Nairobi. A lunch stop at Nyama Mama Capital Center is your chance to dig into traditional Kenyan fare and stretch your legs. Continue to the nearby Giraffe Centre to see these long-legged giants up-close and even take up the opportunity to hand feed a giraffe or two. The next stop on today’s itinerary is the Karen Blixen Museum, where you will join a guided tour. The museum is housed within the former home of the eponymous Danish author, whose most famous work is Out of Africa. Tonight is spent in Nairobi.

Day 6: Nairobi – Amboseli National Park (B, L, D)

Head to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Orphanage following breakfast at the hotel. Located just outside Nairobi, the trust was established in 1977 by Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick DBE in memory of her naturalist husband, David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE. The trust carries out work and projects across Kenya to protect and preserve the country’s wildlife and habitats. It also acts as a sanctuary and shelter for elephant and rhinoceros orphans. This visit is followed with lunch at Carnivore Restaurant. Once you’ve had your fill of the restaurant’s signature buffet, the group makes the journey to your next lodge, situated on the fringe of Amboseli National Park. Dinner is included.

Day 7: Amboseli National Park (B, L, D) lion-icon

Explore the Amboseli National Park today, as you depart in the morning armed with a picnic lunch and the promise of a full-day game drive. The park hugs the Kenya-Tanzania border, and is the second most visited park in Kenya. Among the animals that call the park home are Cape buffalo, blue wildebeest, impala and Masai giraffe. The park is most famous however for its population of free-ranging elephants; including Echo, the elephant formerly studied for four decades by Dr Cynthia Moss. Plus, some areas of the park also promise views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The group returns to the lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 8: Amboseli National Park – Tsavo West National Park (B, L, D) lion-icon

Set your sights on the next park visited on your tour: Tsavo West National Park in Kenya’s Coast Province. As always, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings along the way. Arrive at the lodge and sit down to a tasty lunch before jumping into the safari vehicles and moving into the park for an afternoon game drive. One of the natural sights you’ll visit on the drive is Mzima Springs. This reservoir is actually four natural springs, home to crocodiles and hippopotamus. The group returns to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 9: Tsavo West National Park – Arusha (B, L)

Say goodbye to Kenya today as you leave Tsavo West National Park and cross the border into Tanzania. You will be met by your safari transfer guides on the other side. Your first Tanzanian destination is Arusha, a city located at the foothills of Mt Meru that doubles as a launching pad for those visiting Mount Kilimanjaro. Have lunch in Arusha and continue to the museum at The Tanzanite Experience to learn more about this incredibly rare and precious gemstone. You’ll also discover how this treasure, which is only found in a tiny area in the Manyara Region, is mined and processed. You are then taken to the hotel for check in.

Day 10: Arusha – Lake Manyara National Park – Karatu Town (B, L, D) lion-icon

Attend this morning’s safari briefing before heading to Mto Wa Mbu Village near Lake Manyara. This protected area is UNESCO World Heritage Site located into the Crater Highlands. The mammoth crater is the world’s largest inactive, unfilled and intact volcanic caldera (a cauldron-like hollow space). Learn about this incredible site as you spend the morning on game-viewing drives and hear about how the crater has been occupied by the Mbulu, Datooga, Masai and European settlers over the years. The crater is home to an incredible array of wildlife, including black rhinoceros, African or Cape buffalo, hippopotamus, eland and wildebeest. There is also a population of lions. The group ascends the crater in the afternoon – an experience that will leave in you awe and with memories to treasure for years to come. Make the return to Karatu Town in the afternoon and relive the day over dinner with your travel companions.

Day 12: Karatu Town – Tarangire National Park (B, L, D)

Seek out your next safari destination by driving south from Karatu Town towards Tarangire National Park. This park gets its name from the river that winds through a landscape of ridges, swamps and lush valleys. While Tarangire National Park is known for its elephants and baobab trees, other things to look out for on your afternoon game drive are vervet monkey, banded mongoose, caracal, honey badger, and African wild dog. The group returns to the lodge in the early evening for dinner and to spend the night.
