Highlights

Follow the road-less-travelled to the former kingdom of Burma on a 10 day Magical Myanmar tour.

Get your first taste of Myanmar in Yangon, the city once known as Rangoon. The streetscape of the Myanmar capital is a medley of colonial-influenced architecture in between soaring skyscrapers and gilded Buddhist pagodas and temples. While you have some free time in Yangon to explore at leisure you will also see more in-depth on a city tour – taking you to the likes of Bogyoke Aung San Market, Royal Lake and the emblematic Shwedagon Pagoda. Swap the city for the countryside as you fly to He Hoe and spend two nights in the rural village of Nyaungshwe. This regional hamlet is a go-point for Inle Lake and also offers a glimpse into traditional Burmese life. Take a scenic boat ride across the lake to fully appreciate its bounty, and make stops at neighbouring monasteries, pagodas and floating villages on a guided day trip.

Return to the big smoke at Mandalay and arrive in the city in time to see the sunset at U Bein Bridge, arguably the city’s most famous structure – and said to be the longest and oldest teakwood bridge in the world. Your time in Mandalay isn’t restricted to just the city limits, and a group excursion takes you into the Sagaing Hills, to Kaunghmudaw Pagoda and the watchtower at Inwa, among other stops. The last destination on your Myanmar holiday is Bagan, a place nicknamed ‘City of Four Million Pagodas.’ Bagan is one of the most historically and culturally important destinations in Myanmar; an ancient city that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See some of Bagan’s best-known temples on a group excursion before returning to Yangon for a final overnight stay.

Looking to spend a bit of extra time on holiday? Opt to extend your holiday package to include a 3 night stopover in Singapore on the way back to Australia.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff Myanmar

You arrive in Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, and are picked up at the airport by a hotel transfer. You have the remainder of the day as free time once you are checked into the hotel. You may opt to keep to your hotel room to relax after the flight, or eager explorers may change into their walking shoes and immediately head out into the city.

Day 2: Yangon (B)

A city tour takes you into the bustling streets of Yangon. This outing is the perfect introduction into the history and culture of Myanmar, and the excursion begins with a tour to some of the examples of centuries-old architecture that highlights Yangon’s colonial heritage. Pick up some souvenirs at Bogyoke Aung San Market, see the Royal Lake, and then catch the beautiful sunset at the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Day 3: Yangon – Inle Lake (B)

Breakfast is served at the hotel and the group then takes a transfer to the airport for the short internal flight to He Hoe. You will be met at He Hoe airport by a tour representative and driven to Nyaungshwe, a local village that acts as a gateway to Inle Lake. The remainder of the day is yours as free time, and travellers can choose between exploring neighbouring villages by bike, booking in for a massage at a day spa, organising an additional boat ride, or relaxing at the hotel.

Day 4: Inle Lake (B)

Head out onto the waters of Inle Lake today with a scenic boat ride. The freshwater lake is located in the Shan Hills and is the second-largest lake in Myanmar. Travelling by boat is an excellent way to observe how life operates around the lake’s shores. The sightseeing continues once you are back on land as the group visits Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, one of the most culturally important religious sites in the Shan State. You also see the Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery and the nearby Floating Villages. Head to Indein after lunch and make the short trek to Indein Pagoda – be sure to admire the 8th-century pagodas scattered throughout the countryside along the way. Visit with the Intha tribes and stop at a local market. Return to the hotel in the afternoon.

Day 5: InLe Lake – Mandalay (B)

A transfer takes you back to He Hoe airport after breakfast, and a short flight sees you arrive in Mandalay. This former royal capital sits along the banks of the Irrawaddy River and is home to beautiful pagodas, temples and monasteries. The group is taken to the U Bein Bridge in time to catch sunset – have your camera at the ready to capture the beauty of the sinking sun! This bridge traverses Taung Tha Man Lake and is thought to be the oldest and longest teakwood bridge in the world. The rest of the evening can be spent as free time.

Day 6: Mandalay (B)

Uncover the sights and sounds of the area around Mandalay on a guided excursion. This day trip sees you look in on monks at a nearby monastery and visit a silk-weaving centre in Sagaing. While here you will also visit Kaunghmudaw Pagoda and the Sagaing Hills; the latter is home to many Buddhist monasteries. These sights also offer great views over the Irrawaddy River. The next stop on today’s itinerary is Inwa where you will ride in a horse-pulled cart to the watchtower. You will also learn about Bagaya Monastery and see an alms bowl workshop. The group returns to Mandalay for the night.

Day 7: Mandalay – Bagan (B)

Travel by car to Bagan, a city known as being home to four million pagodas. There is some time to unwind in the hotel before a group outing to see how lacquerware is made. This intricate process is done with twisted bamboo and horse hair. It is then onto a factory where you will see how one of Bagan’s most popular local delicacies, pone yay gyi or fermented black paste from raw soy beans, is made. The last visit of the day is to Taung Bi Village to meet some locals and gain some insight into local life.

Day 8: Bagan (B)

Be shown some of Bagan’s incredible archaeological bounty on a guided tour today. The city is one of the richest archaeological locations in Asia and is a magnet for many travellers exploring Myanmar. First up however, is time in Nyaung U Market where your guide may introduce to the world of traditional Burmese breakfast fare! Take breakfast at a local teahouse next to the market and get a fix of people-watching as you dine. This is followed by visits to a number of temples, including Shwezigon Pagoda, Htilominlo Temple, Ananda Temple, Thatbyinnyu Temple and Dhammayangyi Temple. The last temple of the day is Shwesandaw Pagoda; timed so you can see the sunset.

Day 9: Bagan – Yangon (B)

Have breakfast at the hotel and then be transferred to the local airport to catch a short domestic flight back to Yangon. A hotel transfer will greet you upon arrival and you then have the remainder of the day to enjoy as free time. Tonight is your final night in Myanmar.

Day 10: Yangon – airplane-takeoff  Australia (B)

Make your way to the airport and board a flight to begin your return journey to Australia. You arrive back in Australia later on.
