Day 1: Australia –  airplane-takeoff – Ho Chi Minh City

Today, depart Australia for Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam!

Upon arrival to the airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check-in.

Day 2: Ho Chi Minh City Tour – Cu Chi Tunnels (B,L)

After breakfast, you will have a half day tour of Ho Chi Minh City with highlights such as, Notre Dame Cathedral, Post Office, War Remnant Museum and soaking up the atmosphere at Ben Thanh market, one of Ho Chi Minh’s liveliest areas.

In the afternoon we continue on to Cu Chi Tunnels. During the Vietnam War, guerrilla fighters built a labyrinth of narrow tunnels, using them to hide in during bombing raids and to stage surprise attacks. At its height, the tunnel system stretched over 250km from Saigon to the Cambodian border and was three levels deep. Today, the remaining tunnels have become a major tourist attraction, giving visitors a unique understanding of what life was like during the Vietnam War.

Optional Evening Activity: Saigon Dinner Cruise. In the evening, enjoy an authentic Vietnamese dinner on board a Saigon River Cruise. The Saigon River flows from Cambodia through Southern Vietnam before merging into the South China Sea. Dinner on a river cruise offers the opportunity to witness another side of Saigon.

Day 3: Mekong Cruise: Ho Chi Minh City – My Tho – Cai Be  cruise-icon (B,L,D)

Today you commence your Mekong Cruise. Meet in the welcome lounge in Saigon and enjoy a drink while the staff welcome you and collect your details for boarding. We bid farewell to the hustle and bustle of Saigon and travel 70 km south overland to My Tho to embark on your luxury floating home for your coming journey along the Mighty Mekong.

Upon boarding the crew warmly welcomes you and you check in to your prepared staterooms. The ship sets sail and your fascinating journey of exploring the Mekong can begin. Lunch buffet is served in the restaurant while the vessel steadily glides upstream to reach the overnight spot.

The afternoon allows you to pass the time on your private balcony or join tea time at the open air bar as the twilight bathes the land of the Mekong Delta into a golden haze. While enjoying you dinner, the ship reaches Cai Be, a small charming town famous for its Catholic French church and manufacturing of traditional crafts and food products. The floating market of Cai Be is getting smaller every year, since trading on the water is shifting more and more into modern central markets. We drop anchor mid-stream near Cai Be. After dinner every evening the cinema features selected classic movies.

Day 4: Mekong Cruise: Cai Be – Sa Dec – Tan Chau cruise-icon (B,L,D)

Start your day like many local people do around Asia with an invigorating Tai Chi class on the sun deck as the sun rises. The morning tour takes you to Cai Be where you can still see some boat to boat trading of local goods such as fruits and agricultural products. Your guide will explain the particularities of this long-lasting dealing culture.

Cai Be is a rustic town crisscrossed by many water canals. We go on-shore to visit a workshop where we learn about and observe how rice paste, rice paper, rice cookies and rice wine is manufactured. Cai Be and its surrounding areas are covered by palm trees and hence the region is also famous for the production of coconut candies. With our local boat, we continue to cruise through the lush and green canal network and can observe farmers working in the fields.

Back on board lunch is served followed by some free time – enjoy a true Vietnamese coffee at the bar or simply watch the life on the riverbanks floating by. In the afternoon, reach the area of Sa Dec where you embark on a traditional local boat and head towards Binh Thanh Island. This island is one of the larger ones in the vast stream of the Mekong. Some communities have settled here and make their living by growing water hyacinths. We visit exclusively, one of those untouched areas. By wandering through the village, get a deep understanding of the native life and witness the manual process of mat making. You’ll also meet an elderly local couple who share their story on life on the island.

Back on board you may like to pamper yourself with a spa treatment or take a dip in the pool on the sun deck. The expert guide offers a presentation on the “Life on the Mekong Delta” as the ship continues sailing to Tan Chau – the border town to Cambodia. We moor mid-stream near Tan Chau.

Day 5: Mekong Cruise – Cross border to Cambodia cruise-icon (B,L,D)

Welcome to the fish sanctuary of Vietnam. Begin your day with a hearty breakfast at the dining hall or in the quiet sanctuary of your balcony. Today you’ll take an excursion around Tan Chau, a pleasant, slow-paced town near the Cambodian border with a sizeable Chinese, Kinh and Khmer community.

Once on-shore hop on “xe loi” to explore Tan Chau. A xe loi is a local vehicle which is still used as a taxi in this region. Slowly move around the streets to see all the workshops, houses and domiciles before stopping at the colorful local market near one of the ancient temples. This is the best time to interact with the vendors of this friendly town to practice your bargaining skills.

Board a local boat and cruise past floating houses to finally reach a floating fish farm. This region is the source of fish production to be sold all over the world and you’ll closely see how fish farming works.  Back on board your “home”, set sail towards the Vietnamese-Cambodian border. Get ready for a fascinating and leisurely cruise through the deep Cambodia countryside towards Phnom Penh. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. Dinner is served before arriving in the capital of Cambodia around 7pm, docking at the pier of Phnom Penh.

Day 6: Disembark Cruise – Phnom Penh (B)

Welcome to Phnom Penh – once called the Paris of the East. Despite its rapid development, it’s retained a lot of its rustic charm and elegance. It is an amazing town to bespeak centuries of incredible history and culture which can still be felt at many street corners.

Day 7: Phnom Penh – City Tour (B)

This morning we take in everything Phnom Penh has the offer, The Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, National Museum and Wat Ounalom. Afterwards, enjoy shopping for unique souvenirs at Central Market. Over lunch we watch the royal dance rehearsal by the Apsara Arts Association.

Later, discover the place where journalists camped on the eve of the Khmer Rouge takeover followed by the exciting ghostly building. Touring to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a former school served as Khmer Rouge prison before heading to the Choeung Ek Killing Field and learn about the atrocities that took place here. Finally, taste some Khmer snacks while learning how the bloody history still haunts Cambodian lives.

Day 8: Phnom Penh – airplane-takeoff– Siem Reap (B)

Today you will board a domestic flight to Siem Reap where you’ll stay for three nights. In the afternoon, visit Kampong Khleang, situated on the northern shore of the Tonle Sap Lake. Board a boat and take in the view of the submerged forests and fishing farms. Discover the culture of the fishing villages that thrive at the edges of the lake.

Day 9: Siem Reap – Angkor Temples (B)

Spend a full day discovering the mystical Angkor temples. The world heritage site with soaring towers and one of the most amazing man-made monuments in the world. Visit Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm Monastery, Angkor Thom, Bayon and the Elephant Terrace.

 Day 10: Siem Reap –airplane-takeoff– Australia   (B)

Free time before your transfer to the airport for your return flight home.

Optional tour: Tonle Sap Lake Start your trip with Kampong Kleang, a floating village on the Tonle Sap Lake, and as yet bypassed by mass tourism. All the houses are on stilts offering an exceptional natural environment with breathtaking views of floodplains, rice fields and water vistas as far as the eye can see. Walk through the village meeting the locals and a family who raises crocodiles. Afterwards, travel by boat over the canals to a large lake where Vietnamese people live when they are displaced from their homes because of the seasons.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff – Hanoi

Today, depart Australia for Hanoi, Vietnam!

Upon arrival to the airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check-in.

Day 2: Hanoi City Tour (B)

This morning, we take a city tour of Hanoi and explore attractions such as the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, Ho Chi Minh Complex (Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, One Pillar Pagoda) and Tran Quoc Pagoda, one of the oldest pagodas in Vietnam.

Optional Tour: Hanoi Street Food (include dinner). Walking through the maze of bustling streets that make up Hanoi’s Old Quarter, we tempt our taste buds with the famed Hanoi dish Banh Cuon at a local eatery. Watch in awe as the skilled chefs demonstrate how this tasty dish is put together. Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, we wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago. Your local guide will then take you to one of Hanoi’s best kept secrets; a hidden street food restaurant to taste top street foods in Hanoi – Banh My Hanoi and the famous Egg Coffee. This hard-to-find café is one of the few left in the narrow street inside the old quarter of Hanoi. Or, if coffee is not your style, a cold beer awaits!

 Day 3: Hanoi – Halong Bay cruise-icon (B,L,D)

Today travel by coach through the rich farm land of the Red River Delta to arrive at Halong Bay. Designated a World Heritage site in 1994, Halong Bay’s spectacular scatter of islands, dotted with wind- and wave-eroded grottoes, is a vision of ethereal beauty.

Upon arrival you will board a ship to visit the thousands of limestone islands filled with caves of all shapes and sizes. The sails of junks and sampans gliding along the clear and emerald waters of the bay form a magnificent scene that blends into the sky. You will also have the opportunity to visit some of the hidden grottoes beneath the towering cliffs.

 Day 4: Halong – Hanoi – airplane-takeoff– Danang – Hoi An (B,L)

Awake early and participate in Tai Chi on the top deck or simply relax and enjoy the sunrise over the bay’s towering islands. Enjoy a morning cup of coffee or tea, before setting out to explore nearby islands by rowboat. Return to the junk for breakfast then take advantage of the sundeck and admire the amazing rock formations of Halong Bay. Enjoy an early light lunch before the return journey to Hanoi airport for your flight to Danang. On arrival in Danang, you will met and transferred to the Ancient Town of Hoi An.

 Day 5: Hoi An (B)

This morning you will explore Hoi An on foot, visiting an old merchant’s home, Hoi An Market, a local Chinese temple and the Japanese Covered Bridge. The bridge was first constructed here in the 1590s by the Japanese community to link them with the Chinese quarters. Over the centuries the ornamentation has remained relatively faithful to the original Japanese design. The French flattened out the roadway for cars, but the original arched shape was restored in 1986.

Optional Tour: Tra Que Village. Tra Que is a charming petite village located just a few kilometers from Hoi An. The village is named after the sweet-scented vegetables Hoianese grow in the village, which are used to spice up famous Hoianese delicacies. Depart from your hotel either by private car or bicycle. Stroll through the atmospheric Tra Que Vegetable Village to observe and try the local farming activities. Learn the process of planting vegetable: raking the ground, sowing, watering and picking vegetables. After the farm trip, you will see how good Vietnamese is with ‘Banh xeo’ (sizzling cake). This Vietnamese savory pancake is popular and favored throughout Vietnam.  Finish with a visit to the local market. A light meal will be served during the tour time.

Optional Tour: Hoi An Cooking Class. Start your Hoi An cooking class with a special signature welcome drink. Put your hand in and cook your own dish. You will take the theory and do demonstration for the first two courses. Then you cook by yourself under chef’s observation. You will then have time to enjoy your own food.

Optional Tour: My Son My Son Sanctuary & Thanh Ha Village. Depart the hotel for the 40km journey outside Hoi An. Arrive at My Son Sanctuary, a great sample of ancient Champa civilization situated in the southern region of Vietnam. Stand astounded by a great number of exquisite stone sculptures, temples and towers nestled in tropical jungle. There will be a traditional music show you can choose to enjoy. Around late morning, we will journey back to Hoi An.

Day 6: Hoi An – Danang –airplane-takeoff– Ho Chi Minh City (B)

After breakfast, we leave Hoi An for Da Nang airport to fly to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival, you’ll have a half day tour of Ho Chi Minh City with highlights such as, Notre Dame Cathedral, Post Office, War Remnant Museum and soaking up the atmosphere at Ben Thanh market, one of Ho Chi Minh’s liveliest areas.
