Highlights

Travel through the heart of one of the world’s most prolific wine-producing regions aboard an 10 day Portugal and Spain river cruise with Emirates flights.

Prepare to embark on this incredible experience from Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal and the home of the world-acclaimed eponymous wine (port). Before heading out to uncover the wonders of this marvellous city however, you’ll need to step aboard your luxury river cruise ship. These vessels are smaller than some other cruise liners, giving the experience a decidedly boutique feel. A more compact boat also allows the crew to dock closer to town, plus the ship can also navigate lower water levels if needed. Once you have been shown to your cabin, you will be introduced to the crew and then enjoy a welcome drink with your fellow passengers. It is then straight into the first included activity: an evening tour of Porto. This introduction to the city is sure to make a spectacular first impression; expect to be dazzled by golden-lit buildings, the UNESCO World Heritage Site cityscape and the rich history of Porto.

This evening’s sojourn isn’t your only chance to become acquainted with Porto; there is another trip through the city the following day. This will show off Porto’s good looks in a completely different light – highlights include Palacio da Bolsa and Igreja de São Francisco – and it concludes with a wine tasting at a local cellar. Your voyage along the Douro then begins, seeing you stop in Régua for a tour of Guimaraes before crossing the Portuguese/Spanish border and sailing to Vega de Terron, Barca d’Alva and the stunning university city of Salamanca. As you journey between towns and villages, you’ll step back on terra firma for excursions to lavish palaces, striking cathedrals, regional wine trails and stunning shrines. Back on the ship you will love sitting down to watch Flamenco, Fado (Portuguese singing) and traditional folk performances.

The itinerary is packed with exciting trips and sightseeing excursions, so make the most of your time on-board the river cruise to unwind and relax. Each ship’s Sun Deck is an unbeatable vantage point for lazily watching the landscape pass by as you cruise between ports. Make a beeline for one of the lounges when you have a morning or afternoon spent cruising, and only leave your perch when you need to get a new book, or it is time to head to the restaurant for a meal. All fare served aboard is French-inspired and there is a spectacular gala dinner towards the end of the cruise experience.

Choose the way you cruise

With its carefully selected shore excursions, this itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to enrich their river cruise experience with local insight into port destinations. Passengers may opt to pay to join these excursions once on the ship, however please note that some activities are only available to those that book prior to departure.
