Highlights

Experience the world-renowned beauty of the Swiss countryside for yourself with an incredible 14 day Grand Train Tour of Switzerland.

This tour sees you land in Zurich and you have a whole day of free time in this cosmopolitan city to meander between its museums, landmarks and sights. Then be whisked via rail transfer to the lakefront city of Lucerne for an overnight stay. Swap Lucerne’s German-speaking region for the Italian influence of Ticino when you make moves for Lugano aboard the Gotthard Panorama Express – a route that includes both boat and train travel. More UNESCO-protected landscapes await as you journey to St. Moritz on-board the Bernina Express. Arrive in glitzy St. Moritz, one of the most well-known and recognised mountain towns in the Swiss Alps and enjoy two nights here. Take advantage of a transport card to travel around the area and in mountain railways to viewing points at Corviglia, Corvatsch or Diavolezza.

Jump onto the Glacier Express to seek out Zermatt, a town perched at the foothills of perhaps Switzerland’s most legendary mountain, the Matterhorn. Spending two nights in Zermatt means there is ample time to soak up the beauty of this area and fill your camera roll with happy snaps of the Matterhorn, plus the smattering of other peaks in the region. Enjoy a leisurely stroll about the streets of Montreux, a resort town on the shores of Lake Geneva; or be one of the travellers to visit Chillon Castle, the most frequented historic site in Switzerland.

Appreciate the scenery on a section of the Golden Pass Line and pass through rolling verdant pasture, meadows and vineyards when it is time to head to the Interlaken district. The charming town of Wilderswil is a jumping-off point for a day trip to Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest railway station and privy to such incredible views that it is called ‘The Top of Europe’. Return to Zurich after crossing the Brunig Pass.

Throughout your Swiss journey you have use of local transport cards (an incredible inclusion to help you get around each destination), plus a Digital Swiss Coupon Pass that is brimming with 2-for-1 discounts redeemable on local excursions, restaurants and attractions.

Day 1: Australia – airplane-takeoff– Zurich

Make your way to the airport and catch a Switzerland-bound flight to Zurich.

Day 2: Zurich

On arrival at the airport, collect your documentation which includes all the transport cards necessary for the remainder of your journey. Catch a local train to Zurich city centre and make your way to the hotel for your first night in this gorgeous city.

For those purchasing the Tour Only option, your tour starts today. Please make your own way to the hotel.

Day 3: Zurich (B)

Your first full day in Switzerland is yours for the taking – do and see this city however you fancy. Zurich is a global business and financial hub, but is also home to excellent museums, striking monuments, boutique-scattered boulevards and more. Take in two of Zurich’s most recognisable landmarks – Grossmünster and Fraumünster – or get a retail fix with the shops strewn along the city’s main street, Bahnhofstrasse. Wander the cobbled streets of the Old Town and learn about the area’s medieval history, or stroll along the waterfront promenades for ample photo opportunities.

Day 4: Zurich – train-icon Lucerne (B)

Take a rail transfer to Lucerne. Located in the German-speaking area of Switzerland, Lucerne is a small yet stylish city that is popular for its Old Town and historical architecture. Its photogenic perch – tucked between a lake and the mountains – makes it even more appealing to travellers.

Day 5: Lucerne – train-icon  Lugano (B)

Your first scenic rail journey of the tour takes you from Lucerne to Lugano aboard the Gotthard Panorama Express. This route is spectacular and also includes a lake cruise from Lucerne to Flüelen. Lugano, your destination, sits within the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland and the Italian influence extends as far as the architecture and culture. Upon arrival in Lugano, find your way to the hotel for check in and then enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Talk a stroll around the banks of Lake Lugano, visit LAC Lugano Art Centre, or jump into a cable car to ascend the side of Monte San Salvatore and be rewarded with gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape.

Please note that the Gotthard Panorama Express does not operate on Mondays. Should travel on this day fall on a Monday, the Gotthard Panorama Express will be replaced with similar trains that service the same route.

Day 6: Lugano – train-icon St. Moritz (B)

Today you travel on the Bernina Express to move from Lugano to St. Moritz. This route crosses through the Engadin Alps and a section of it also runs along the Rhaetian Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You arrive in St. Moritz and have free time. This glamorous alpine resort town is considered one of the pioneers of modern-day winter sports; the town has even twice played hosted to the Winter Olympic Games!

Day 7: St. Moritz (B)

The day is yours to explore St. Moritz however you like. Make use of your Digital Swiss Coupon Pass or free transport card (included as part of the tour) to access to most of the mountain railways; some of the most scenic of your mountain railway options include Corviglia, Corvatsch and Diavolezza. Keen walkers can also tackle the path atop Muottas Muragl for extraordinary views of the area.

Day 8: St. Moritz – train-icon  Zermatt (B)

Board the Glacier Express to make your way from St. Moritz to Zermatt today. Take in the breathtaking scenery from within a panoramic carriage and be sure to keep an eye out as you take the Oberalp Pass into the Rhone Valley, and through the Rhine Gorge. This route also sees you travel through 91 tunnels and across 291 bridges. English commentary is available on-board.

Day 9: Zermatt (B)

There is no set itinerary for your free day in Zermatt. This mountain resort has a stellar reputation for its alpine pursuits, but it is also popular for its location: at the foot of the pyramid-shaped Matterhorn – one of the highest peaks in the Alps and Europe. A popular must-see for visitors is Gornergrat, a ridge that offers glorious views of the neighbouring mountains and landscape. It is accessible via the Gornergrat rack railway – which just happens to be the highest open-air cog railway in Europe. You can also take advantage of any local offers featured in the Digital Swiss Coupon Pass!

Day 10: Zermatt – train-icon  Montreux (B)

Travel by train from Zermatt to Montreux today. This resort town is situated on the shoreline of Lake Geneva and is fringed by vineyards and views of the snow-covered Alps. Be sure to stroll along the gorgeous lakefront promenade while here (it leads to neighbouring Vevey), or head out onto the lake to see Chillon Castle.

Day 11: Montreux – train-icon  Interlaken (Wilderswil) (B)

All aboard the Golden Pass Line for the journey to Interlaken (Wilderswil)! This route is arguably one of the most well-travelled by visitors to Switzerland and is particularly beloved for the scenery it passes by. Your hotel tonight is in Wilderswil, a charming village that is only a short drive away from the heart of Interlaken. You have free time upon arrival.

Day 12: Interlaken – train-icon  Jungfraujoch – Interlaken (Wilderswil) (B)

Today’s excursion is sure to be a highlight of your time in Switzerland. You are headed to the Jungfraujoch, a railway station that is more commonly referred to as the ‘Top of Europe.’ It is the highest train station in Europe and as such, the views from this point are simply breathtaking. You depart on this outing after breakfast at the hotel, and have some time to explore once you arrive. Head to the viewing terraces Sphinx or Plateau for magnificent vistas. Return to Interlaken/Wilderswil in the afternoon.

Day 13: Interlaken (Wilderswil) – train-icon  Zurich – airplane-takeoff – Australia (B)

Hop aboard the Luzern-Interlaken Express to make the final leg of this journey. The train departs after breakfast and sees you travel past even more of Switzerland’s seemingly never-ending scenery: glittering lakes, thundering waterfalls and the Brunig Pass. On arrival in Lucerne, connect with train services to Zurich and onwards to the airport ready for your flight home to Australia.

For those purchasing the Tour Only option, your tour starts today. Please make your own way to the hotel.

Day 14: Australia

Arrive back in Australia today.
