An experienced driver-guide shares a wealth of fascinating information about glaciers, icefields and their impact on our environment.—Must be booked prior to departure.
After time at the Columbia Icefields, we continue the short journey to our overnight stop in the quaint mountain town of Hinton.
Day 3: Hinton – Jasper – Kamloops (B)
This morning we make the short journey to the alpine town of Jasper. Here, the whole morning is at leisure to explore the town at your own pace. Some mountain towns base their appeal on trying to be trendy. Jasper retains its timeless appeal by being unpretentious — an intimate community that originated as a railway town that just happens to be in the middle of some of the most gorgeous protected wilderness in the world. After time exploring Jasper we continue through the stellar scenery before making our way out of the Rocky Mountains and on to the town of Kamloops.
Day 4: Kamloops – Whistler – Vancouver (B)
Today our journey takes us along the Trans Canadian Highway towards the Ski town of Whistler. After arriving in Whistler, you will enjoy some time to eat or stroll around this picturesque mountain town. Whistler is only about 2 hours North of Vancouver, and roughly about 4 hours West of Kamloops. Over two million people visit Whistler annually, primarily for alpine skiing and snowboarding and, in Summer, mostly mountain biking. Its pedestrian village centre has won numerous design awards and Whistler has been voted among the top destinations in North America. Whistler’s urban landscape was specifically designed to accommodate the natural environment. Many of Whistler’s bears have learned to do things like open car doors or hold spring-closed gates open so they can reach food. Some have even learnt to open the newspaper bins! We then continue down the North Shore. Highway 99, between Horseshoe Bay & Squamish, has to be one of the most beautiful roads in the area. With the ocean glimmering on the right and the mountains rising on the left, it is truly enchanting. On arrival into Vancouver, enjoy a panoramic tour of Vancouver before arriving at hotel.
Day 5: Vancouver – Embark on cruise (B,D)
Today, your private motor coach will transport you from the hotel to the Vancouver cruise port, to join your luxury 5 star Celebrity Cruise of the inside passage. Upon arrival at the cruise port check-in with your cruise ship and enjoy a wonderful cruise through the natural wonders of Alaska.
Day 6: Inside Passage (B,L,D)
Today you are at sea and you’ll sail beyond the Inside Passage into the more protected Alaska Inside Passage. Home to diverse wildlife—orca, mountain goats, bald eagles, bears, puffins, sea otters and more—the complex labyrinth of fjords and bays are where whales and sea lions find refuge during the summer months. You’ll never forget the sight of 40-ton whales hurling themselves into the air, almost completely escaping the water. If you’re especially lucky, you could see them swimming together to create a bubble net, trapping and eating fish by the giant mouthful.
Day 7: Ice Strait Point (B,L,D)
For thousands of years, the Tlingit Indians have called this place home. Located near the city of Hoonah, and home to a historic cannery, Icy Strait Point also offers travelers the chance to view wildlife like humpback whales, orcas, seals, eagles, and brown bears, or to explore monuments to the region’s fishing heritage.
Day 8: Hubbard Glacier (B,L,D)
Hubbard Glacier is the largest calving glacier on the North American continent. The glacier routinely calves off icebergs as high as 10-story buildings, sending massive blocks of ice into the sea every few minutes. At 76 miles long, 7 miles wide and 600 feet tall, this natural wonder will make even the ship feel small. Lookout for newly calved icebergs that can shoot up suddenly from below the waterline.
Day 9: Juneau (B,L,D)
Today you are ported in the town of Juneau. Here’s your chance to take a glacial dogsled adventure via helicopter in Alaska’s capital (at own expense). A city that gracefully balances frontier ruggedness with cosmopolitan flair. Mendenhall Glacier, a river of ice measuring 1.5 miles in width and over 6 miles in length, is part of Juneau’s Icefield, 1500 square miles of ice that feeds 38 glaciers and ready for you to take a float trip on it
Day 10: Ketchikan (B,L,D)
You’ve never tasted salmon so fresh. Known as the ‘Salmon Capital of the World’, Ketchikan is also the ancestral home of the Tlingit people, who have carved the world’s largest collection of totem poles. If you’re up for an adventure, take a canoe and nature trail excursion through the rain forest or a wilderness exploration followed by a sumptuous crab feast you can’t resist.
Day 11: Inside Passage (B,L,D)
Enjoy the day at sea on your luxury ship as it makes its way towards the beautiful inside passage.
